Bump starts, by pushing or by running downhill, are not recommended for modern cars. Why is this? They used to be my winter standby.

Desperate to get the 309 started after 3 weeks starting , I push started it. Rolled to about 15 ,lifted clutch in 2nd and there was an odd... grinding noise from the engine followed by a very unhappy sounding misfire. Its fine now though. Should Mum get rid of it before the next MOT indicates cat damage?!!
