Fuel costs are so high that supermarket filling stations are the only way of saving a few bob. Tesco/morrisons etc offer discounts.HJ does not like supermarket petrol.Does it not all come from the same refinery?I use Waitrose staion which is Esso(I believe).Would it be advisable to fill up with super instead of premium u/leaded occasionly?Or would this be a waste of "bite the bullet" money? I only do about 6000 per annum mileage.

6000miles/30mpg= 200 gallons = 900 litres

7p extra will buy Shell V-power x 900 = £63/year = £1.22p per week - the price of a cup of tea.

There is saving money and there is penny pinching.

Run it on LPG if you want to save cash.

Ive never looked into the LPG thing for two reasons. First off theres only one garage within a 20 mile radius of me that i know of which sells the stuff and secondly i dont trust any Government to keep the tax down on it. I know the moment ive spent the money on the conversion out of nowhere the duty will ratchet up.

What does the owner's manual recommend? Does it say any fuel of 95 octane or above, or does it say 95 can be used, but 97 / 98 gives optimum performance?

As pointed out above, at 6,000 miles per year, any saving you make by switching fuels is less than half the price of a pack of 10 cigs per week.

Mine gets either supermarket, Texaco or as a little treat when the price isn't too high, some V-Power. There is nothing wrong with supermarket fuel; it just may not have the additives (which can keep everything clean inside) in it that BP or Shell put in. There was a concern about the amount of water molecules in supermarket fuel a few years ago, but as far as I can remember that rarely caused an issue and they had their wrists slapped about quality control.
