99 vw polo 1.4 88k miles - clutch problem - minty

Returned from a short 6 mile run parked up all ok no problems whatsoever , started car 2 hours later engine perfect but unable to select any gears. Tried starting in gear and clutch drag is evident as car moves if handbrake not applied. If the car is started in first gear and gently driven I am unable to select a further gear with the engine running. I presume something has seized or stuck in the clutch operating mechanism as the clutch did not slip or judder prior to this suddenly occuring. I wondered can this problem be solved without replacing the complete clutch .

Your comments would be greatfully recieved

Does it use a hydraulic or cable operated clutch? If its the former, there may have been a leak of hydraulic fluid.

The clutch is cable operated and is in excellent order.

Faulty cable? _ You can only say it's perfect after you have removed it.
