BMW 5 Series E60 - Main Dealer Servicing vs Independent Specialist - tmjs

I've got a 57-reg BMW 520d SE. It came with a "service inclusive" package so I've been getting it serviced for free by a main dealer, but once I've done 60,000 miles (currently on 55,000) I'm going to have to pay.

While I've been happy with the work done by the main dealer, they are rather expensive - £175 for an oil change. An Independent Specialist would be a lot cheaper, but are there any disadvantages? Will it make any difference to the price I'll get when I sell the car (I expect to keep it for at least 2 more years).

You've got it in one.

BMW more than anyone have managed to convince the public (& hence the trade) that a BMW franchised FSH is worth more than a non-franchised one, the result is ... that it is.

Well done to BMW, who have successfully managed to protect their dealers, the residual values of their cars & the prices the owners can realise when they sell the cars.

Does this mean the cars are better maintained .... probably not.

Whichever way you decide, good luck

Maintaining a main dealer service history does effect the residual value of your car whether you sell it privatley or trade it in at a dealer.

What is sometimes more inpmortant is the peace of mind that the car you drive everyday is safe and reliable. Main Dealers are experts in their make of car and they have the latest equipment and they use authorised parts that were designed for that specific make and model.

Should you pay a premium for this when your car gets beyond a certain age. No I don't think you should.

I think you should be offered an automatic discount on the servcing and the additional parts and labour if your car is over say, 3 years old.

If you hunt around the web for 'main dealer discounts' you may find a website offering such a service and discount.

Either way - you own a lovely car so I hope you make the right call for you.

Hmm. there are plenty of examples where dealerships' 'expertise' has been found wanting. "No power mate? What you need is a new turbo..." is the classic example. Or fitting a new turbo where the old one was genuinely broken, but not finding the root cause for why the original failed, so the new one fails almost immediately.

Dealerships are experts in selling things. Some of them have excellent technicians-a lot do not.

My local independant procures manufacturer original parts if required, doesnt make me go back 7 times to fix one basic problem and doesnt make me remove limbs to pay for it.

There are independents and independents - i.e. some are BMW specialists and some are generalists who service any make of car.

If you take your BMW to one of the former, such as the excellent Berkshire Motor Works near Wokingham who look after my Z3, this shouldn't adversely affect your resale value as you can reasonably claim that it has full BMW service history.

What I would do is when a service is due if you have a few main dealer options locally shop around to get the best price (even main dealer prices vary a lot).

Then when the car is having its service and you get the inevitable call that the brake discs and pads need replacing then get these (and any other extras) done elsewhere.

This way you keep the full dealer history and at least minimise some of the costs.
