Skoda Octavia - 1.9PD injectors - Mark_Space

Hi,

I've been thinking of buying an approx two year old 1.9PD Octavia and have read about injector issues on recent VAG diesel engines. There's been some debate on HJ and other forums about whether Siemens or Bosch injectors are fitted to recent 1.9PD units. So, I contacted Skoda customer service, gave them the registration plate of an 09 example from a local dealer and asked who made its fuel injectors. The answer was Siemens. So, the HJ car-by-car has it correct. (I also asked if it had a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and they said it didn't.)

Having read a lot of bad things on the net about Siemens piezo injectors on VAG diesel engines, my impression is that the Siemens injector failures are way more common on the 2.0 engines (e.g. in the Passat) than on the 1.9 ones, the 1.9 seeming reasonably reliable. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Mark_Space.

Between 1.9 and 2.0 engines there is a big difference - the 2.0's are all common-rail and include modern gizmos like dual-mass flywheels - which have made them smoother and even slightly more powerful but alas also less reliable. The 1.9 in both PD and normal guise is much more reliable - especially the venerated TDI 110 and PD 105 - just check out the Fabia TDI PD 105 and Octavia TDI 110 - everyone raves about them as if they never fail - and you can find Octavias with a quarter-million miles on the clock with still quite a lease of life left in them! Something you cannot quite say of the 2.0's which are also much thirstier!

Some of the early 2.0s were PD, not common rail. Later 1.9s use piezo operated injectors which have a chequered reputation.

Good advice above.

If you're in the market for a late PD diesel there is a minefield out there. It's almost impossible to identify positively which equipment is fitted to the various engines without the use of EKTA. EKTA is the VAG spares catalogue and is accurate and definitive.

If you're in discussions with a dealer, get the engine code (usually 3 letters) of the vehicle you are considering and ask to see the relevant EKTA page for the cylinder head assembly. Then ask some searching questions...

Another approach is to examine the engine ECU - Bosch for Bosch injectors and Siemens for the piezo units. Unfortunately the ECU lives is a box with a screwed down lid - so you'll have to ask very nicely.

I would not under any circumstances whatever buy a PD engine fitted with Siemens injectors.

I'm not that familiar with skodas, but in Audiland only the 2.0 170 BHP PD engines had the Siemens injectors I think.

On the newer CR diesels I'm not sure if injectors are still an issue, least I hope not as I have a TDI 143 Audi !

Firstly all Mk2 Octavia diesels have dual mass flywheels, even the 1.9, so if you want a diesel Octavia there's no avoiding them.

Although the later 1.9 engines have Siemens injectors it is specifically the Siemens piezo injectors in the 2.0 170 bhp PD VRS version that give trouble. The ones in the 1.9 don't seem to have any problems despite coming from the same manufacturer.

The majority of 2.0 TDI Octavias are not common rail but PD, the common rail versions came along later. The variants of the 2.0 PD which were fitted to the Octavia did not have balancer shafts (unlike the Passat etc) so do not have the oil pump drive issue that afflicts the larger VAG 2.0 diesels. There are plenty of 2.0 PD140 engines in Octavias with 200k plus on them - it's not the same engine as the Passat -different oil pump, different injectors.

Personally the only diesel engine I would avoid in the mk2 Octavia is the 2.0 PD 170 VRS - it suffered from both injector problems and DPF issues. The rest aren't bad.
