Renault Megane Coupe + Cabrio - worn disc brakes - survivor

My 2008 registered car failed it's 1st mot yesterday. The garage stated it required new discs and pads. As the car has done only 27000 mls can you tell me if this is normal for a three year old car with this mileage. I really feel it's quite excessive as I had a vauxhall vectra with 65,000 mls on the clock and the original discs and never had any problem passing an mot.

Disks are plain steel exposed to the elements: cleaned and derusted only by use. Do few miles and they corrode and wear.

It seems to be normal practise to change the discs with the pads, if that is the original set of pads that's not a bad mileage, mine only last about 30,000 and I drive very gently. I don't usually change my discs unless they are noticable worn and it goes through the MOT allright.

Some garages treat 'discs 'n' pads' as a nice little money spinner. My previous MOT garage tried that trick with me-once. I didn't go back.

I don't think driving excessively carefully is particularly good for brake life. The discs rust and quickly get scored. If slowing to a halt I'll often push the clutch in, so I can get the brakes good and hot without wasting fuel. Brakes and pads still good after 50,000 miles.
