Mazda MX5 - buying a new car - milage strange? - matteo

Hi,

i went to view a car today which i really liked, i was about to hand over some money when i thought first of all i'd look at the log book and MOT certs, he happily brought them out and we sat in the car and viewed them, i noticed a problem with one of them though...

the car as it stands has done 81000 miles,

however on the latest MOT certificate it says that the car has done 61,231 Miles, i thought it was a bit suspisious but he looked as shocked as me as he didn't do the last MOT he was going to look into it, the MOT certificates go as follows,

03/02/2006 68,328 Miles

21/02/2007 71,298 Miles
16/02/2008 73,320 Miles
18/02/2009 74,818 Miles
20/02/2010 79,477 Miles
10/01/2011 61,231 Miles
all the testing centres were the same up until the last one which was different... the latest MOT says 61231, while the dash says 81000 roughly... anybody know what i should be doing/ asking?
Thanks for reading

An error of transcription? The mileage was 81, 231 miles and the MOT tester has misread the initial 8 as a 6?

This happened to me. Car went in for the test at 37k and came out with a certificate reading 17k. Didn't notice 'til I got home. How he mistook a 3 for a 1 heaven knows.

Going for a haircut tomorrow... :)

It happened to me too, they put the mileage off the old certificate on the new one. But not quite, as their printer wasn't working I had to go back to pick it up, so it's a few miles different. Human error.

But, do you know how easy it is to change a mileage these days? I would never trust one at all, not at all, the previous owner might have changed it year by year.

Mileage is worthless.
