Peugeot 306 - New wiper motor - dodgy wipers still - MrSheen

On the way down to Cornwall last week, my wipers packed up. During some heavy rain. Visibility = zero. It pained me to get towed back, but there you go. Can't drive if you can't see.

Anyway, I had a new wiper motor fitted at my local garage. Drove it home. Made the mistake of not testing them there & then as I was late for something. Tried them later and this is what I found:

The 3 wipes that you get with the screenwash, was now 7. Way too many.

The single wipe (holding the arm down) worked, but when you released the arm, they stopped where they were.

The intermittent wipe wasn't intermittent. It was just the standard wipe. And when you turned it off, again, they stopped where they were on their cycle.

I spoke to the garage as I assumed it was something they'd not set up right when installing the new motor and the chap said that it's probably the stalk control that's at fault. I'm taking it in later, but wanted to see if this sounds likely? It's a remarkable coincidence that the control goes just after they install the new motor!

Appreciate any help on this.

Cheers.

Chris

Sounds as if the auto-park function is bust. My understanding is that this depends on contacts in the motor itself and, assuming the wiring has been reconnected correctly, I'm guessing that the motor is duff.

Cheers. It's handy to be able to go back to the garage armed with a little more knowledge on things. Having paid £200+ to have a new motor fitted, I don't expect them to be charging me to fix some imaginary problem with the stalk control! Thanks.

Hi mate, I've just bought a 306 and have exactly the same problem, Did you get it sorted in the end and was it the stalk or the motor? or something else? Cheers mate, hopefully you'll see this message, I really dont wanna start changing mototrs if its just a matter of cleaning the stalk!

Many thanks

As you can see from 659FBE's reply below, you could clean the switch without too much trouble, but I understand that the standard fix for wiper problems like these is a new motor, which contains a lot of the bits necessary for the different functions.

Clean switch, then change motor?

Probably a faulty column switch - I've experienced this on a 106. The switch is made by Valeo who use the wrong contact lubricant (mineral grease) which oxidises the contacts. As continuity in the column switch is needed for the blades to park properly (run-on is completed via the column switch and the motor's parking switch) oxidised contacts will also cause non parking.

Remove the column shrouds and the 2 Torx screws securing the switch. There is a large multiway connector to unplug. On the 106, there is then JUST enough room to slide out the switch with no further dismantling.

Surprisingly, the switch can be taken apart easily - more small Torx screws and a few latches. Clean all of the gunk out of the switch, polish up the fixed and moving brass contacts and lubricate with petroleum jelly. For a French electrical item, it's surprisingly well made.

I did this job 5 years ago without any subsequent failure. On the 106, the rear wiper also put in a comedy act before the fix.
