£7k for runabout for sister with new baby! - perleman

Hi all,

My sister has just passed her driving test aged 34 & is due to give birth in a few weeks!! Her hubby has a work car, Volvo estate, and their old motor is a 2002 Golf 1.6 mark 4 which is showing it's age. I might advise her initially to run around in the Golf untill it packs in (it has a few niggles and on a 10 year old car from VW it won't necessarily be worth spending money & hassle trying to repair)

She has a notional budget of £7k for a replacement and requirements are as follows:

* A main dealer car - she & hubby have no expertise whatsoever & want the peace of mind of dealing with a dealership

* No more than 3 years old, must be reliable, not worth buying an older car they don't want the hassle

* Only used for local trips & very occasional longer journeys with hubby

I would suggest something like a Focus as they seem to be well thought of, safe, and plenty to choose from. No need for a diesel as milage will be low (6k a year?)

Any thoughts please?

There is no point in spending £7000 on a car for a new driver. New drivers are always hard on cars and it would be a shame to use an expensive car as a learning aid.

The 2002 Golf sounds perfect. Easy to drive, inexpensive, should be reasonably reliable. Should still look respectable enough.

For peace of mind take out the best road assistance package available-probably cost about £100 p.a.

There is of course the thorny issue of vanity and pride-but that is not a technical question...

I would have to agree on the price thing, nobody should spend more than a grand on a car for a new driver in my opinion.

I would stick with the golf for another year or three, if theres nothing substantially wrong with it.

Correct first time, little better than a focus here in The real world.

Agree with everyone else keep with the Golf...when you are a new driver you want something that you don't mind it it gets a few knocks etc and no point is splashing out when you don't need to.

If we look carefully at the original post we can see that what the lady wants is peace of mind. If the Golf is reliable at the moment, and she is happy driving it (and also, importantly, if it's a 5-door), then there is some sense in keeping it until it can't be relied on any more

Following the Golf I'd suggest something smallish (but 5-door), easy to drive and reliable. My non-mechanical elder daughter, a nanny, has had four 1.3 Toyota Yarises, and all have been excellent. A newish one of these would suit her adnmirably, although if she'd prefer a new or nearly-new car, something like a Kia Picanto might fit the bill. For more room the Honda Jazz should be on the shortlist.

Assuming the lady in question will be transporting the new arrival (best wishes!) in her car, she will need a five door vehicle. fitting the requisite baby seat/carrier might form part of any test drive or look around potential purchases. A decent sized boot will also be handy. I sense they aren't bothered about badge cachet, wanting peace of mind instead.Toyota springs to mind. Or a Korean hatch with lots of warranty left.

Thanks for all the replies so far - I think the option of her using the Golf is by far the most sensible however the ultimate decision does not rest with me & if sis/hubby/my parents decide on a new car I just want to be able to give the best advice for that scenario. I don't know much about these sorts of vehicles as I'm more of a performance car kind of chap.

A brand new Hyundai i10 or wait for the i10 based KIA Picanto which will be even cheaper but with a 7 year warranty instead of 5. Group 1 or 2 insurance, aircon and cheap road tax.

Or if you want something bigger (Focus sized), a two year old Kia Cee'd, you'll have plenty of change from £7K plus 5 years of warranty left.

Would the warranty still apply to the second owner of the vehicle?

Yes Hyundai and KIA warrantys are fully transferable free of charge, of course the vehicle should have been (and be) serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's schedule.

If you decided on the Focus and want the "peace of mind" it would need to be Ford Direct. Not sure how many Focuses from Ford Direct are in that budget. I note that like many dealer networks the search engine is terrible (insists on a post code even if you do "nationwide" search). Only seems to let you select "new Focus". What most people want is just to know what stock is at their local dealer, not that the car they might want is in Lands End of John O'Groats.
