Hi i desperately need some ideas, my usually very reliable peugeot 406 hasnt been starting since the last lot of snow. I have had the glow plugs changed and still no luck. It will bump start and jump start eventualy, the battery has also been checked and that is ok too. the last time it started there was thick black smoke coming out of the exhaust, could this be a clue? once car has been started it runs fine and will start for the day but the next day it turns over but does not start. please any suggestions would be great :0) xxxxxxxx

Are battery terminals clean and tight? What about alternatorand solenoid - have you checked that is working? - might be worth joining AA for minimal cost -they will call out and do basic checks to identify problem at your home

You say you have had new glow plugs but have they actually been tested in situ? Connect a voltmeter between the glow plug terminal lead and earth, it should read about 11 volts for 15-20 seconds after you turn the ignition switch to the glow plug position, if there is no voltage, it won't start.

Is there blue/white smoke coming from the exhaust when you are trying to start it? If not there is no fuel being delivered which could be due to air getting into the system, try pumping the primer until it goes hard and then starting it.

Lift the bonnet when the car is running. if there are any clear fuel filters fitted to the car or a sight bowl near the primer pump (if fitted!) then check for air bubbles in the fuel when the car is running, if there are some then you have an air leak down-stream of the main pump, or a problem with the lifter (fuel tank) pump (again if fitted).

Slacken an injector pipe and turn the engine over and see if there is any fuel coming out if not the fuel solonoid in the pump may be sticking, if its a very early engine you may be able to get to it but I think most are buried inside armour on the pump.
