KIA Ceed Sport 2L Diesel - Rapid Tyre Wear - Morton

I have a 2009 KIA Ceed Sport 2litre diesel with 17” alloy wheels. It has done a little less than 17,000 from new. I have a couple of problems that I would like your opinion on.

The car was fitted with Michelin 225/45 R17 91W tyres and the front ones need replacing. KIA tell me they are soft tyres and wear quickly. (the rear tyres are fine) I have seen a road test on the net which scrubbed the front tyres at 14, 600 miles. KIA told me to put ‘harder’ tyres on. I’m wondering which tyres you would advise for improved wear and improved fuel consumption.

I bought the 2 litre as I tow a caravan. I’m wondering if it would be an advantage to replace the alloys with 15” steel wheels and tyres. These would be 195/65 R15. The idea is that I'd not not notice the potholes as much as I do with the 17" alloys, but am concerned that it may affect the handling. I 'd have to inform the insurance of the change I presume.

Many thanks, William

I don't like low profile tyres, apart from the dreadful ride they can also damage easily, both my cars use 195/65/15s they have much more give in them than your 17" and I would think should last longer, I would also think that they are cheaper. Are the tyres wearing evenly? if so you can rule out alignment so unless you drive like a boy racer I can only put it down to the tyres.

Modern cars do seem to be heavier on tyres and I have seen people complaining of worn out tyres at lower mileages than yours but my old Citroen XM will do 30,000 on the fronts.

Thanks for that. The tyres have both worn evenly acccross. I take great care on speed humps. Never more then 15mph and don't straddle the narrow ones.

I reckon 17000 miles is a good result on the front of quite a powerful car.

On my Passat I swop the front to the back after about 9000 miles, so I usually need a new set at 18000 miles. I prefer to buy 4 tyres together, I like the same make. The car came on Dunlop 200Es, they were terrible in the wet,. Since then I've had Continental Premium 2s and Pirelli P7s. There is nothing between them, they are very good.
