Possible Replacements - Car

Could be facing a large bill on my car of £1000 or a bit more, and may be further repairs and therefore are considering whether to replace car.

Car is a focus sized saloon car, has a diesel engine which produces just over 150BHP and has 147,000 miles on clock, is elven years old and averages 47 mpg, and covers 11,000 miles a year

If replacing it I would like to have something of the same size ,power, and fuel costs. If I went for a petrol it would need to average 45mpg, and insurance would have to be group 8 or less

Total budget would be £1500 to £2000

Suggestions of possible replacements please, or would I be better off having repairs done.

Thanks.

More information before anyone can give an honest opinion.

What car is it, how long owned, type of servicing it recieves, what has needed doing over your ownership and what was done before if known.

What do you use the car for, estimated mileage and how long would you normally expect to keep it.

Any issues apart from the current ones, and what indeed needs fixing now.

VW Bora tdi

Would expect to keep vehicle for 5 to 6 years has I had aimed to keep the current one for this length of time.

Mot due end of March, may need suspension work, alloy wheels leak air and vibration through brake pedal when braking firmly from 50mph or above.

Trust the above helps

At that price I'd go for another Bora.

Seems well cared for, keep it up...i'd be keeping it.
Maybe let your indy have it and let him take it for the test...i do that with my old MB, then my indy fixes anything within reason...reading between the lines you are happy with your indy and trust him...keep him, they are not easily found.

Make judgement when the failure sheet comes through, sounds like the brakes may need replacement anyway, possible the odd suspension bush/strut/damper.

When you have an idea what that lots going to cost, and assuming you decide to keep it, then source a replacement set of alloys from ebay or similar..or..get your present set refurbished (if worth it) by someone like ''Laptab'' at Birmingham who will shot blast the wheels, powder coat all surfaces and stove them.

From the sounds of it the car is sound, you know the history and will have a better idea of costs once it's been in for MOT.
No telling what you may be buying instead...the devil you know etc.

Wheel leaks can be fixed, mine cost £60 for the four and its fine now. I think at 2k you'd not guarantee getting a car thats bullet proof so you may be better off fixing the one you have.

So you're after a 150bhp 45mpg focus sized car between £1500 and £2000?

With the wear & tear problems you describe (for that's all they are it seems..) & your budget for a replacement , I'd suggest it makes little sense to buy another car.

For £1500-2000 you could well be buying lots more problems - but your money's gone by then.

Or to put it another way - If I spent £2000 on a car & discovered it only had the current car's repair bill, I'd be pleased.

Result: reapir current car.

Thanks for all the responses.

Car is currently at garage waiting appraisal, just seems a lot of money to spend on repairing car, so will wait to I know what needs to be done and find the most economic way of doing this.

Will also ask garage to check over the rest of the car and advise me of anthing that will need doing in the next 12 months so I can make the correct decision.

Let us know what they say, because from what you've described, some suspension work, leaking alloys and a vibration from the brake pedal doesn't sound like £1000 of work to me - unless all the shocks and top mounts and bushes need replacing maybe. You should be able to get parts for an old Bora pretty cheaply.

£1000 was for replacement clutch and dual mass flywheel plus suspension replacements, and after last week repairs may be need on the gearbox

circa £800.
