Gauge not working at all on wifes 1997 106 extra time, have checked connections on tank sender unit seems ok, has 4 or 5 wires on top of unit, surely connecting together the right 2 would make the gauge rise thus eliminating other faults so that I would know for sure that its the unit at fault. Peugeot say they are £50 - £100 + vat so I want to be sure before I pay out.
Any comments welcome.

Have you checked that the float is not stuck at the bottom? If fine grit accumulates in the tank it can interfere with the float. Take it out and give it a good rinse.
