Peugeot 106 - Trouble starting after charging up battery - jasey_2000uk

Hi, this is my first post here and wondering if anyone could help me. I am pretty dumb when it comes to cars.

I have a Peugeot 106 XL (petrol) 1996 which has been in my garage unused for about 3 weeks and had a flat battery. I put it on charge overnight and when I went to start it today, it will not start at all. The lights all work fine though which they weren't when the battery was flat.

I put my keys in and turn on the ignition then put the code into the immobiliser as normal and the green light comes on to say the correct code has been entered. But when I try to start it, nothing happens.

Can anyone help me or some advice would be greatly appreciated?

many thanks,

jay

When you say nothing happens, does the starter turn the engine over and it doesn't start or does nothing at all happen?

Just nothing happens at all. no sound or anything. just dead.

Absolutely nothing, no clicking, (starter solenoid) or anything at all ?

Don't suppose you have a multimeter you could read the battery voltage with ?....ebt

Clue: "The lights all work fine though which they weren't when the battery was flat."

So you left a completely flat battery for 3 weeks uncharged?

Dead. Buy a new one.. Or borrow a good one to try it.

Switch the headlights on & try to start it, if they dim considerably then your battery is dead or loose conexion.

If they stay bright it might be your starter motor is dead or loose conexion, try giving it a tap & check the wiring is secure. Could also be faulty contact on the ignition switch, try some WD40 in there.

No sound, nothing at all.

Tested the battery and its fully charged.

Last used it about 3 weeks back and it was fine then, didnt think the battery would go so flat so quickly.

How did you test it. Do you have a voltage meter. Regards Peter

right, Ive just turned the lights on full and then tried to start it, still nothing at all, no clicks, nothing but the lights didnt dim or nothing.

It sounds as if the ignition barrel has failed so there is no feed to the starter solenoid, bit of a coincidence but you need to check out the connection to the starter and the solenoid. Regards Peter

Ah ill have a look in my Peugeot handbook and find out where these can be located (told u im dumb with cars!)

thanks.

If you can get to the starter, test for 12v arriving at the starter solenoid (small wire) when the key is turned to the start position. (ie, get someone to sit in the car).

If you have 12v when the key is turned, and there's no "clicking" from the solenoid, then the solenoids suspect. If it is clicking, maybe the solenoid is defective and not switching the 12v through to the starter motor itself, or the starter motor is suspect (brushes etc)....ebt

But thinking about it, it could still be an immobiliser fault even though you're getting the green light. Possible that it is not allowing 12v to the solenoid......ebt

i noticed also that when I try to start it, just the battery light goes off but the other lights stay on. It comes back on when i go back to the ignition.

The immobiliser on this model does not stop the starter motor from cranking it inhibits the fuel pump and ECU. Regards Peter

Many thanks Peter.

Back to the solenoid pick voltage then ?.....ebt

would it help if i disconnected the battery and reconnected it again?

Peugeot 106 - Trouble starting after charging up battery - dieselnut

Disconnecting the battery won't do any good.

From what you've described the problem is either the starter motor or ignition switch.

You will only find out which is at fault with a test meter, but sounds like you are not familiar enough with cars to go any further.

Did you try tapping the starter motor or WD40 down the ignition switch ?

Otherwise think it time to call out a mobile mechanic or get a couple of mates to give you a push start & take it to a local garage.

you talk about disconnecting the battery again ! are you sure that if you disconnected when charging all the cables are back on the battery ? i'm sure on a 106 you have two main cables and wonder whether one has dropped down the side of the battery ? common problem on mondeo's.
Peugeot 106 - Trouble starting after charging up battery - jasey_2000uk

The 2 cables are connected okay in the battery.

I am going to have a good look at it today and see what I can do.

Also, should the immobiliser pad turn green before I press the C after entering the four 1's?
