I have a problem with heavy vibration under braking. I have fitted new discs& pads, new wheel bearings & caliper guide pins. The vibration is more pronounced at low speed, when there is strong movement on the steering wheel. Could I be requring a new caliper?

Any suggestions will be very welcome

many thanks

I suspect that the problem is with the tyres rather than brakes, the movement on the steering wheel suggests you have an out of shape tyre, probably due to ply seperation. Try swapping the front and rear wheels, or jack each side of the car up at a time with the wheel just clear of the ground and rotate it, observe carefully the gap between the tyre and road, any variation denotes a defective tyre.

As Peter.N. said plus its possible the tread is worn to point where its out of line at one point causing a wobble

Seems very common lately, just had one myself...new tyres as well

Did you have the vibration prior to fitting all the brake parts. Regards Peter

No vibration prior to new parts, tyres are fine

Maybe excessive run out on a disc?

Sounds like the mating surfaces were not cleaned properly and run out checked and that is where the vibration is coming from. Regards Peter

Have you actually checked the tyres for run out? The fact that they were OK before the brake job doesn't necessarely mean they still are.

Sounds to me as though the job has not been done correctly the only way to find the problem is redo, it could even be wheel nuts not tightened,

If the apparent brake vibration hasn't changed despite new discs and pads, then there's every chance it isn't either, or faulty fitting, as it would be extremely unfortunate to duplicate the symptoms precisely.

You're obviously happy with the operation and freeing off of the calipers, did you push the pistons all the way in..did you inspect the pistons as best you could by peeling the dust covers back when the pistons were nearly all the way out?

Check for wear in all suspension joints and both inner and outer CV joints, worn inner joints can cause a horrible vibration, but usually under power, check for drive shaft itself out of true.

Have you swapped wheels front to back as a test...safe and easy to spin the wheels on the back to have a nose at how they run...check for buckled wheel too.

Have the brakes ever been bled and or the fuid renewed...outside bet but it won't do any harm if it's been years.

I have run a car in gear with the front end super firmly chocked up (and rear end very frimly chocked and braked), with wheels off then on...this is not to be taken lightly as there are obvious dangers so don't consider it unless you have the know how and correct conditions.

Forgot to add, did you clean the accululated rust and salty crud from all moving/slding surfaces of the calipers and lubricate those parts.

When checking the inner and outer CV joints, check carefully that the rubber boots haven't split and the grease vanished...by the way in times gone by i would after a reasonable mileage snip the larger end of the rubber boots, repack the joints with CV grease and reseal with a good cable tie, kept them going for many years that way.
