Overheated for the first time last night. Engine still driving,it has genuine 80,000 miles been told head gaskett gone? Car drives fine and has normal oil consumption but heavy petrol consumption and loses water from filler tank for radiator no leaks from hoses or radiator? is it the head gaskett? shall i get work done or scrap it?

A good mechanic will test your coolant for the tell tale signs of exhaust gasses that shouldn't be there, with a special tester.

The decision to scrap it will depend on how much it costs to do the head gasket. If the garage avoids the customary 'skim', and reuses the headbolts, the head gasket is very cheap. Quite labour intensive though. Probably about £300 for an el cheapo job. Probably worth it if the rest of the car still seems decent.

Loosing water from expansion tank usually = failed head gasket.

cheers for advice yes car is mint condition so will have to get a garage to repair.I am not sure if I can drive car? it turns okay and drives but a couple of miles to garage?
