Ford Focus - 2007 Ford Focus intermittent total engine failure - hilson28

I hope someone can help - have a 2007 Focus 1.6 which has developed an intermittent fault. Three times in the past couple of months we've had the engine cut out - power steering etc fails and engine wont re-start. On each occasion we've been unable to re-start the car, but after calling out recovery the car has eventually started (with no intervention) - although once only after it was bumped onto the recovery 'cradle'. On the last occasion the recovery guy checked the plugs and there was no spark (until it was bumped!)

Two ford garages and one local have been unable to locate any fault - although the first one said that the coil pack was showing a fault in the engine log so they replaced that. It had no effect although after the second breakdown they replaced the coil-pack again (again to no effect since it broke down a couple of weeks later).

Part of the wiring loom has been checked - unwrapped & checked for corrosion with none found.

The only fault ever shown in the log is coil-pack.

So far we've spent £300 on investigation / test / new coil pack with no results.

I cant see what other option we have than to sell the car - a car that might fail on you at any time is pointless, i'm especially worried about any long distance trips.

Thanks.

I should also add that over the last couple of months we have had the occasional misfire - at least i assume that is what it is, there is a very short power loss and then everything seems fine. This has happened maybe half a dozen times in the last couple of months.

Hi

I have a galaxy and had a similar problem. I was driving along, luckily in traffic, when the car just stopped. I had no engine power to the car, all power steering was off and it wouldn't restart. It turned over but nothing. I called recovery who swore it was the fuel lines, although I didn't believe it was. I was towed to the garage and a few theories were offered. We tried it again and the car started, ran for about five minutes then stalled again. We looked at the door light (where the old latch type thing would have been) and it was flashing (it wasn't doing this before!) this meant the ECU had a problem and it was suggested it was having problems recognising the key. We then towed it to Ford, who after putting it on their own diagnostic machine found the fault to be a relay in the ECU. This is the second time it has happened, the same switch replaced twice (out of gaurantee!). It fines fine now.....
