i have oil sludge in the hoses leading from the emmisions control value through to the intercooler

engine runs fine slight black smoke on acceleration fully serviced but high mileage

any ideas of cause of sludge

Oil mist condensation, no problem as long as its not causing a blockage.

first elbow was quite thick and messy

Its quite normal to have oil deposits in anything connected to the crank case breathing/air intake pipes but there will be more if the engine is worn. If its running OK I wouldn't worry about it but it might be a good idea to clean the pipes out if obstructed.
