Hi, i was wondering if anyone knew the approximate cost of replacing the gearbox, on a semi automatic yaris, it's an '05 and has mileage in the twenties, and the whole gearbox has gone on it. Does anyone know also why this might have happened to a car with such low mileage too? Any advice etc... would be really appreciated, as we're in dire straits at the moment!

I take it that this is a MMT and not a Freetronic?

I assume it is not a full automatic and is basically the automated manual gearbox.

Some of these gave problems.. but the whole gearbox should not go unless the oil escaped. The various relays/motors that drive the gearchanging tend to give problems and few garages have the expertise to sort them properly.

Lots of gearboxes on ebay-- have it a full Toyota sh and when was it last serviced? What are the symptons of failure?

Hi thanks for replying.

It is an MMT, i won't pretend i know much about cars, and yes it would be the automated gearbox.

It was last serviced a few months ago, and we specifically asked them to check the gearbox, as we thought there were some issues. they said there were no problems? which we doubted...

The symptoms are basically there was a strong burning smell, and we lost power, called a mechanic out to get us, he said the gearbox has gone, and towed us home!

Not sure what we're going to do, as neither me nor my husband has any expertise with cars, so we have to rely on a garage, i just want to try and get a bit more clued in, so they don't rip me off!

Would Toyota be able to fix it?

How did you get on with this ?

My father just bought a Yaris MMT and after a few days the transmission was playing up, culminating in the same symptoms as you describe = burning smell and loss of Drive.

The problem has been diagnosed as a failed clutch which will cost approx £ 500 to fix. However in this case the garage he bought the car from is fixing it.

So not as bad as a new gearbox

Glad it's sorted.

My advice to anyone thinking of buying a MMT gearbox car? Go and lie down till you change your mind.

100% agree

In fact I can expand a little on this subject. My Father had a previous generation Yaris which was equipped with a proper automatic gearbox and gave exellent service for many years, he thought it was time to replace it with a newer model and saw this at his local garage, the dealer did not make it clear to him that it was any different from the old Yaris and a deal was done without him ever having a test drive.

Since he collected the car in January he has covered less than 400 miles and been back to the garage to complain about the odd jerky and noisy progress the car has been making, when on his last visit it actually expired in a cloud of smoke as he arrived at the dealership.

Today they have agreed to have it fixed and warranted by Toyota for one year. Plus if he is still not happy they will offer him another vehicle of equivalent value.

There is an art to driving what is effectively an automated manual gearbox. It's not like a normal auto where gearchanges are slurred due to the hydraulic coupling...

But my view is if you buy an auto, it should be that : automatic and work....

Couldn't agree more with Madf's views on these boxes.

I'll add my tuppence...if Toyota's best efforts don't last or even provide a competent drive, what hope those makes not known for their customer care, longevity or pleasant easy drive.

It's paramount that anyone considering buying one of these contraptions, whatever the make, has an extended test drive route chosen themselves, not the salesmans perfect 2 mile drive route, to include (simulated will do fine) heavy stop start and slow creeping traffic, hill starts, close precise manoeuvering and checking the box isn't fooled by and responds quickly to normal junction and overtaking moves...too late once bought.
