Peugeot 306 - 306 Diesel Pump & Alternator problems! Please help - s32bauer

Hi,

I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice.

My car battery died the other day, and turns out that it was due to a fault with the alternator. Upon investigation, it appears that the diesel pump was leaking diesel. Not only this, but it was dripping in the alternator which had caused it to stop charging the battery.

I have several questions that I'm hoping people can advise me on:

1) Is it likely that I'm going to need a new diesel pump altogether, or is it possible that it might be leaking from a seal or washer on the diesel pump. It looks like it could be coming from the top.

2) I've been quoted about £500 for a new Lucas diesel pump, and about £150 for a new alternator. Do these prices sound accurate?

3) One garage has said that I would only need the diesel pump and alternator replacing. However, two garages have advised me that in order to change these parts, they would also have to change the water pump and cambelt as well. Does this sound correct?

The details of my car are a Peugeot 306. N reg. It's a naturally aspirated diesel.

Any help or advice would be greatly received!

It may be possible to repair the pump but it would need to be done by a diesel specialist, these will generally be cheaper than a dealer anyway as they usually know what they are doing. The cheapest way would probably be to fit a secondhand pump and alternator, that's what I would do but not so easy if you are are not a DIYer. £500 actually sound quite cheap for a new pump but a second hand one should be much cheaper.

You have to remove the cam belt to get the pump off, in view of that it would be prudent to fit a new belt and as the water pump is also driven by the belt it would be wise although not essential to replace that at the same time.

I have just changed the alternator on my '96 806td as mine had PAS fluid all over it, from a leak, and this was a straight swap, I can't see why you'd need to have the waterpump and cambelt done, I suppose with 20%vat they're trying to rip you off and get quids in.....

As for the pump, I had major immobiliser issues with mine early last year and was quoted £1200ish for a new one at euro car parts, not a cheap option!! so I'd try and source someone clued up for advice on sealing the leak before replacing it.

Peugeot 306 - 306 Diesel Pump - olderguy

Ayup, I have just removed my 2001 306 Lucas diesel fuel pump. Now 'all' the brave souls who have done this so easy (what a pig it was to get off) talk about leaving or putting in two bolts to lock the fuel pump sprocket to assist refitting. Well I'm begiggered by this coz when I take off the pump away comes the sprocket attached to the pump flange. OK I take away the centre nut and there we are one pump at one end of the bench and the sprocket at the other end of bench - leaving behind the key and widget on the pump shaft. I'm now hunting a new pump BUT how will I know the replacement pump is in the right position - does the keyway define the pump 'timing'? Surely it'll have been turned ?
