I'm off up in the hills over Christmas with bog standard road tyres. Getting a set of winter tyres is out of the question (price, storage etc) so I am considering chains or snow socks.....anyone any views ? Places to buy, prices ?

You will find most places, have sold out. I enquired about winter tyres for my Mazda 5 (I have a spare set of rims) and every place I have tried including Dunlop UK has sold their entire winter stock. Autosocks are also sold out in my tyre size. Guess I shall act earlier next year. In answer to your question, I beleive that snow socks are effective, but don't use them on tarmac for too long, as they will get destroyed. Personally, having to keep taking them on and off during my commute would be a real pain, especially as some of the rural roads are difficult and dangerous to stop on. If you get some, remember to keep a bin liner in the car for them, as they are sopping wet when you remove them. Good luck.

If your "bog standard road tyres" are at 3mm or less, you'll get some benefits by replacing them now even if they are normal summer tyres.

go new, go narrow if possible, and as chunky/blocky a tread as possible, the currently fashionable tyres with the hugh circumferential grooves seem to be worst.

But i thought my-tyres mail order Ex Germany were still supplying, I suppose certain sizes are cleaned out though,

My old girl on a cheap pair of new Achilles was pretty ( I was going to say unstoppable there??, but not quite what I meant) good last winter in the snow. These same tyres then appeared to be pretty useless on a wet road in the spring. Horses for courses apparently.

I bought a pair of autosocks and they worked miracles getting my car up and down my packed ice covered steep road onto the main roads.

Not particuarly hard wearing - you have to remove them when you get onto clear tarmac, but the level of grip is impressive.

A neighbour thought I was chancing it driving my car down my road as the road was extremely slippery when the ice had partially melted after some rain, but he was astonished when I got the car down and onto my driveway easily.

Thanks for the comments. Going to invest in a pair of 'socks' - it I can find somewhere that has stock left!!

our recent experiences are, vectra with 3/4mm lassas on front was rubbish, huge difference when new mohawks(cheap tyres)put on;missus zafira with 5mm pirellip6000 was also totally rubbish, new pair of winter tyres, mastersteel? made amazing difference;put key in tread and you can see the tread move quite easliy.
