Engine Replacement - Warranty - barneybee
Hi,

My first post in quite a while...

I bought a 2.5 year old car about 3 weeks ago from a main dealer. As the weather has got colder I noticed an odd sound, which has been diagnoised as piston slap. The car has done 17K and has a FSH. The dealer has advised that the manufacturer wants to change the engine (or at least the bottom end). My questions are:

Should I keep the car or exercise the 30 day exchange policy?

If I do keep the car will I have any problems selling it in future because of this?

Any advice appreciated, as exchanging it is my preferred option but it will cost me several hundred pounds plus a new finance deal on a more expensive model.

Although it can occur for other reasons its usually associated with old high mileage cars. Most commonly the slap is simply down to excessive clearance between the piston and the bore arising from said high mileage.

17k miles in 2.5 years is nothing, what make/model of car is this?

If they have offered to replace the short engine and they genuinely do that, then it should be OK.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't want to post too many details as I don't want to upset/offend the dealer, as they are helping me (unlike some I have dealt with). But it's a Mazda 2.

The general train of thought is the vehicle was owned by an older person before me and that the issue has most likely been there from day 1 but wasn't noticed. I believe they will do a proper repair job but I'm concerned I'll end up in a spiral of issues post fix and paranoid about the engine.

Mazda have one of the best ratings currently, You will get a 1 year minimum warranty on the repair, if in doubt ask the dealer and Mazda to reassure you (and extend the warranty). Is it from a Mazda main dealer, if so take the repair, if not main dealer say goodbye. Good luck!
