BMW 3 Series E46 Diesel - BMW smoking when on idle - caz111

Hi, my bmw diesel 2003, 92,000 miles has started to smoke excessively when I start it or on idle eg left running for a few minutes, I started it yesterday under the car porch and within 5 minutes it was unbearable and filled the house with smoke! it doesn't smoke once it's warmed up or driving at normal speeds, has anyone got any ideas what it could be?

You want to put the problem on one of the BMW forums,it sounds awfully like the butterfly valves are chocked up these are situated in the inlet manifold and if they disintergrate they will destroy the engine,its a very common fault with BMW diesels from 2000 to 2006.

The best cure is to remove them completely and fit blanking plates costs about 40ukp and takes about an hour to do.Bmw have regonised this problem but the modified butterflies also fail.

Had a customers 525d doing same thing on idle. Turned out to be easily cured by replacing the breather. Part approx £45 from dealer.
