I think banning someone for doing something actually illegal is preposterous - luckily this Labour MP with his newly acquired criminal record still has a rather good job and gold plated pension, I'd much rather ruin the career of a successful businessman who works, expenses only, for the state for having an opinion - wouldn't you?...

He/she will probably take the traffic fine out of their expenses claim!

Along with the toothbrush that they used at last nights hotel!

The initiative taken for the concern is very serious and need an attention of every one. This is the concern which exists in the society and needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as possible.

Do people still get off drink-driving?Know of a couple of cases in the past.First was a property magnate, don`t know how he was acquitted, but other had a health care prof offer proof that the body can produce alcohol of it`s own accord whilst breaking down certain foods.

Speaking to a sister in Oz who carries a breath-analyser around with her as one glass of wine on an empty stomach can put her over their lower limit in the state she resides in and she can not afford to lose her high-powered job which supports her comfortable lifestyle.

As well as dodging the drink-driver in Oz(who is the biggest killer on the road in one State)there are the drugged up truck drivers at the wheel of some of those huge road-trains.Uppers to keep them awake for those long days/distances,followed by downers to sleep.Don`t know when the tacho is coming in but two young truck-drivers jailed recently for running red lights and killing car drivers.

Talking to one of my English truck driver mates and as they pootle along at 56mph whilst everything is recorded for download to Swansea to be told off for their braking style etc,a Polish(that`s from Poland, not Mr Autoglym!) lorry can hurtle past at 85mph.They are soon back out of the country whatever they`ve done....wonder if they`re drink-driving too?

In relation to the OP .... I think it is typical of the majority of MP’s, two faced, don’t do as I do - do as I say, hypocites.

Slightly unrelated but I would favour an outright ban on DD. Its just too difficult for some people to stop at one.

Think the fine is rather light

MP banned - Drunk Driver - s.v.u.

Actually he was not convicted of drunk driving but of refusing to give a blood or breath sample, which carries an automatic 12 month ban. The reason for doing this is that at insurance renewal time he will not be clobbered with a massive insurance hike as he will be able to honestly state that he has never had a drink driving conviction. In effect it would be the same as though he had decided just not to renew his insurance policy for 12 months and would therefor be able to maintain his NCB. However the court has given him a ban of I think 16 or 18 months so he will lose his NCB and have to start from scratch in that regard, but this will still be cheaper than trying to insure with a drink drive conviction.

Being a UK MP he will still be entitled to free travel no doubt.

"However the court has given him a ban of I think 16 or 18 months so he will lose his NCB and have to start from scratch in that regard"

Earlier this year I had not had insurance cover for 2yrs 2months but still managed to find an insurance co who accepted/protected my 9yrs NCB ,at a decent premium.Prior to this I also rang Tesco Car Ins and was told that had I been insured with them at the time my insurance lapsed then they would have carried my 9yrs NCB,even after two years with no ins. Most Ins companies told me the cut-off was 2 years for lapsed ins to affect NCB with them.People kept telling me not to go over the two year mark without insurance but didn`t bother to keep tags on time and blew it by 2 months.

The MP in question will have no problems whatsoever getting insured when he`s allowed to hit the road again. Most of that ilk love to be chauffeured around like Lord Muck anyhow.

Why is it an offense to refuse to give a blood test, therefore maybe incriminating yourself?

MP banned - Drunk Driver - Collos25

Because thats the law of the land like it or not.

MP banned - Drunk Driver - dieseldogg

It may well be the "law of the land" but in any other respect than for a motoring offence I suspect that the human rights lot would have "shredded" this apparent anomoly.

Now if one were "stocious" such that a reasonable observer could conclude that one was definately over the limit, perhaps Ok.

However if one were marginally intoxicated and refused to give a breath or blood sample.

How stands justice there?

cheers

I don't think the MP will be able to get insurance by claiming he wasn't done for drink driving because he didn't fail a breathalyser test. The insurance companies ask if you have any motoring convictions and failing to give a sample is as bad as failing a breathalyser.

Just glad the idiot didn't actually kill anyone. It's not as if he couldn't afford a cab, is it?

Better to spend x amount on a cab home than to pay taxi fares for the next twelve months.

Unless you can claim expenses... :)

should have got 24months ban

They are getting very serious about lowering the drink limit.

Yes, those in power will keep finding ways of legislating people off our heavily crowded roads (attacking the symptoms) without ever admitting or controlling the source of the problem - too many people on this little island.
