hi all
I am faced with a problem
Want to change car with big running costs for one with cheap running costs.
Existing car is £315pm with 20 mpg and 440 road tax pa.
I wanted to buy an audi 1.6di sportback but dealer only wanted to sell me 1.6 petrol 3 door at 20k£ or face a 5 month wait. lol. Are all audi dealers total muppets?
Me thinks golf bluemotion is closest to what I want so head to nearest dealer.
Salesman feigns indifference and tells me blue motion is incredibly rare but offers me base spec golf with steel wheels. Is it just me?
WTF. I go into my local bmw dealer and he discounts a 118d by 2k,offers me 1k more for my car than anyone else and a 4 year pcp deal £50 less than audi, volkwagen, skoda.
TL.DR
Never considered a bmw before, are they as good as a skoda vrs crd

The BMW 1-series is a good car to drive, although there's very little room in the back and the whole car doesn't use space well. But if your driving is mainly one-up or two up it should be a good buy.

I have an Octavia vRS - about the same price as a 118d but with performance equal to a 120d. It's a bigger car and has a great deal more room for both passengers and luggage - more than a 3-series. It's only my subjective view, but I think it's at least as good to drive as a BMW - in my case better, as the BMW driving position doesn't suit me.

Definitely a case of horses for courses - go and have a look and see what you think. Also try, if you can find one, better Audi and VW dealers. If you're not fussy about colour and are happy with the standard spec, they may be able to find what you wanty in the dealer network.

I'd prefer the Golf myself...less pretentious but it's your cash.

I think the OP is experiencing the same thing as many prospective purchasers are: long lead times for new cars. I don't suppose the Audi dealer is a 'total muppet', but simply being honest in that many A3s have very long delivery times. Likewise a Bluemotion Golf. It wouldn't surprise me if a VW dealer knew such a model wasn't available until spring 2011. These dealers will try to sell what they have or what they know is available. Just check the Hyundai IX35 thread out for an insight.

However, if it is reduced running costs you are after I would be looking at an Octavia, not an Audi. If the 'prestige badge' is important then fair enough....just calculate how much it is going to cost you first.

There is a new A3 due in about 6 months, and much as I like the current model it is looking its age imo.

Golf is very good. Nice style and quality.

1 Series is rwd and not much use in ice/snow, though strangely better than a 3 series! Also has runflat tyres.

Hmm lets see :-

Audi A3 - respectable and nice quality little car with good residuals albeit a bit pricey

Golf - Good alternative to A3 a bit cheper still respectable but slightly more mundane but still good residuals.

BMW 1 Series - ugly overpriced wanabee car that just says - "i couldn't afford a proper beamer" !!

I always thought the same of the Audi TBH. Not pretty, and seems to be a bit 'desperate'. At least the 1 series (of which I am not really a fan), drives well.

The Golf is probably the best bet.

Octavia (especially VRS) would be good.

Update: after visit to bmw with wife and 6 year old child decided that the bmw is just too wee in the back. They are now offering me a 318d (10 months old) for the same price as a new octavia vrs crd.

Just for reference in the past 12 years I have been driving (in order)

golf mkIII vr6

civic type r

octavia mk1 vrs

mazda cx-7

by a country mile the octavia has been the best all round car but I feel that I have been there and done that so would like a change. I am also getting older and bored with spending time filling up in petrol stations.

Make sure you try both a 3-series and an Octavia vRS before you finally decide. The vRS CR diesel is faster than a 318d and may seem different enough to you from the mark 1 (petrol I presume) for it to be enough of a change.

But as you haven't had a BMW you may simply want one, and good luck - they are of course great cars. Go for a 320d if you can run to it.

thanks too all who replied, I am going to try the bmw and the octavia tomorrow. I will try to update this. It may boil down to service/warranty deals unless one is the much better car.

Hi all again
I have plumped for the BMW 318d after all. Surprisingly it will be the cheapest to run.
The Skoda had a bigger oomph feeling but the BMW had enough to keep me happy.
Quality wise nothing between them.
The BMW had 5 years free servicing included which swung it for me.
However if I had had a BMW before but never a Skoda I would probably have gone for the vrs.
Thanks for your advice backroom.
