car four years old 21000 miles and time for a new cambelt. vw maindealer £299

Independent £270

local Vauxhall main dealer £223 non genuine vw parts but reputable OE parts with all normal warranties.

Is it better to fit V W genuine or is there no difference.?

With such a small difference in price I'd say go for the genuine article at the VAG garage.

I would agree with steve Lee or did you try your local skoda dealer same parts as your vw dealer and usually a littel cheeper

Why does your VW, maker of reputedly durable vehicles, need a new belt when still so new and barely run in? Our ten year old Ford's belt is good for 100,000 and ten years [not that I have any intention of changing it...ever.....it looked perfectly OK when I last inspected it].

Because VW say so ,they need the work.

Yes I know there are very few miles on it, and I dont know why they cant be made to last life of the vehicle. but if it needs doing to preserve warranty then it would be foolish not to change it at stated 4years old, time has a great deteriation on belts not nessasarily milage.

Unless you've got a used car warranty the issue of warranty is not relevant - 3yrs from new.

I would get it done, together with tensioner and water pump, for peace of mind, but it's not urgent. The belts are very robust, certainly on the diesel engines.

I have continued warranty with warranty direct and quite rightly they need the car to be maintained per schedule, to maintain cover. It is not good enough to rely on anacdotal evidence for robustness of belt saying its not urgent.

It's not anecdotal evidence. I saw the belt that came off my Audi after 5 years/62k miles, and it looked almost new and certainly tough and chunky. Think of a wide fan belt with teeth that's been on a course of steroids!

If you need to keep the warranty valid then obviously get it done.

Thanks for reply but getting away from original question, are genuine parts better than OE parts or no difference, just paying for name.

,time has a great deteriation on belts not nessasarily milage.

Only when measured in decades. The original fan belt on my 1980 TR7 is still satisfactory - as was the cambelt on our ten yr old Passat with more than 240,000m. Modern belts only break if something makes them break.
