Volvo v70XC auto petrol 2001Y - Rear diff bearing noise and auto box fluid - raypro

Hello - Recently had my latest in whole string of V70s written off in accident and decided to try the xc model, 2001 Yreg, 98k, good history and condition. Bearing type noise from rear, not power on/off dependant and suspect diff as evidence of oil leak from front of diff. Topped up oil, but no real improvement in noise and leakage increased. Quoted locally 4 hours labour and £1200 for new diff, which is obviously out of the question for this age of car, can you recommend a good company to remove/rebuild/refit, or exchange swop? Based in Slough/High Wycombe area.

All tyres good and new condition.

Also, auto box fluid not as clean as I like so will change myself ( I usually do all but major items myself). Handbook says 'absolutely nothing but Volvo fluid' but is this true or a marketing ploy for their branded, expensive fluid? Surely, a suitable dexron rated alternative is acceptable?

Many thanks,
Raypro

Are you sure it is not a rear wheel bearing. The Auto transmission fluid is quite specific but available from vaushall a lot cheaper. Post on www.volvoclub.org.uk for more information, the topic has very recently been discussed. Redards Peter

Hello and thanks for that, sorry for delay in reply. Sadly, sure it's diff bearing, probably ns but think I have now located donor vehicle. Tip on fluid was good, have bought and that's my weekend job. Let you know if I have any problems... Raypro

The transmission fluid for the autobox needs to conform to JWS 3309 spec. Obviously the Volvo fluid will, but you will also find that Toyota Type IV spec will as does GM fluid part no 93160393 available from Vauxhall and Saab dealers.

Don't use any other kind of fluid, only 3309 standard.

When I changed the fluid in my S80 auto, I ended up buying from a Vauxhall dealer, as that was the cheapest locally. The 12x 1 litre containers they supplied didn't mention JWS 3309, but the big cardboard box they were all packaging in did.

Also, look around on the net for hints on how to change the fluid on these, with a section of rubber tubing it's possible to use the ATF pump to flush 90% on the old fluid out, which is obviously superior to simply draining and re-filling, which will only replace maybe 30% of the fluid. Search for "Gibbons method Volvo ATF change". I beleive the original post was on VolvoXC forums.

Hello and sorry for delay in reply. Excellent info, and using your part number bought from my local SAAB dealer, trade, at £6.30/litre plus vat against £10 from Volvo and £8.28 from local trade parts supplier for Comma AWS which they checked and say is to this spec.

I know on early V70, of which I had several, could pump out fluid from circulation hose with engine running if very careful, and doing this way two flushes was enough to thoroughly clense fluid. Checking on method mentioned and many thanks - that's my weekend spoken for, but the box definitely needs it.

Think I have now found donor vehicle for rear diff.

Hello again - Gibbons method is indeed still there on volvoXC.com and appears very similar to the earlier process I mentioned. Trying it out shortly.
