Renault Clio II - possible key/immobilser problem - jonnyc500

Hello

For the last few weeks we've been having problems starting our 51 plate 1.2 clio, the car will start with no problems for days then all of a sudden it decides not to start fot minutes hours or days.

When you turn the elcetrics on and the red light under the speedo stays on steady the car will start, when the same light flashes the wont start, although when i try to start it with the light flashing you can hear the car trying to start.

I have been given a few opinions on what this could be but nothing concrete, first of all it was the wiring harness, then the crankshaft sensor, immobiliser, transponder in key.

Most recently i called the RAC out, he put the jump leads on and it started straight away, in his opinion it was the battery, he was going to check properly but that meant turning the engine off and risking the car not starting again.

My head is battered with this now so hope somebody can help.

Cheers, Jonny.

Why not believe the RAC man you need the battery checking it may or may not be the problem but until you test it you will never know.

It sounds like the immobiliser has gone from the "start" position (red light on then it goes off after a minute or so) to the immobiliser "set" position (red light flashing) because you have not started the car within the time allowed for this. Clicking the immobiliser once, when inside the car, should trigger the start position as above. This is explained in the handbook. The immobiliser arrangement can be irritating but it does the job that it was intended to do. You need to ensure that the battery in your "key " is in good condition as well.
