Celica Convertible - Battery for Infrequently used Car - Surrey_Scientist

I have a grey-import celica convertible that doesn't get used very often - just high days and holidays for a good long run to the coast or a anational trust proerpty or some other excursion .

Although the car itself is 100% reliable the battery is not liking the infrequent use and now struggles to hold any charge.,

Is there a special battery I can buy which will tolerate the infrequent use better. Are these "Leisure batteries" I've seen advertised of this type ? Most of the dimensions I have seen on those mean it will not fit the battery box....

Would it be easier to buy a battery charger and charge the battery ones in a while ? Just a thought.

ALDI are currently offering one that just keeps the battery *topped-up",can be left permanently connected. It won't charge a flat battery. Halfords do a similar one.

I don't have power close to where the car is stored, so not practical to be charging the battery...

I need a battery that will last the infrequent use.

How about a solar-powered device?

Try googling 'solar powered car battery charger'.

Most lead acid batteries will go flat if left standing for a few months, and it does them no good at all, the plates sulphate preventing it from holding a charge. The best thing I would think, as suggested is a solar charger, sits on the dashboard and plugs into the cigar lighter, the car must be parked where it gets good light of course, preferably direct sunshine - have a look on ebay.

The only thing with a solar charger you need sun which we don't have a lot of.

DO NOT buy a lead acid battery. As above, they will decay with age. Period.

Buy a calcium battery: far less likely to decay...
