I am due to go to France on Saturday. The country is currently suffering turmoil from strikers and there are fuel shortages in some regions. I can get down to the house on a tank of diesel from home in the UK but don't want to get stranded.

Given that I have a large tank of heating oil at the house could this be used in the Santa Fe in an emergency? I appreciate the tax/ customs and excise issues, I am just looking for a technical comment.

I guess I might need to enhance the lubricants in the heating fuel?

Hello, that sounds a bit risky to me in a three year old car.Are there any problems yet in Calais for filling up with fuel.?If anything goes wrong in your car injectors etc.Not worth it in my opinion.

I wouldn't do it voluntarily but am just thinking about worst case scenario - stuck 400 miles from Calais and needing to get back for work etc. I wouldn't feel confident about doing it unless someone can provide the specifications of the two fuels for comparison.

It may be prudent to simply call off the trip but I thought I would explore alternatives.

The attached should assist you. I reckon it could be too expensive to run your diesel on paraffin (kerosene) BTW!

Thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated.

I'm inclining to your and others view; if I was running an old diesel engined car it would work fine as they can cope with a wide variety of fuels (old chip fat etc.!) but it would be risky on a modern car.

Hope the problems are over for your trip to France,if you got stopped using heating oil i believe there is a dye in it which is very difficult to get writ off ,the fine is about 500 euro's.

The trouble is the dye stays in the tank for months. If Customs stop and test you within 6 months of using it, you may be caught .

(Not that I've ever been stoppped and tested ever in 20 years of driving diesels.

way too risky for both the diesel driven components as well as the risk of getting caught now or in the future.
iether scrap the trip or load up a load of gerry cans & take fue;l with you but you may get it lifted on the way.

I am in Brittany just now and there are supplies of fuel about. Local supermarket had a delivery of petrol yesterday and judging by the long queues at another they also had fuel.

If t'wer me i'd get 3 jerry cans and fill to the brim (tilted back so no air therefore no slop), that'll be 60 litres you have to play with.
