Odd "moment" yesterday. - TeeCee

Early morning doing the school / work run.

Waiting at a busy roundabout, the vehicle entering from the preceeding turning lit a nearside light as doing so. Something "clicked" upstairs and I started the process of pulling out. It passed the exit and kept coming, I stopped and looked again, wondering what had caused the "Ok to set off" reaction, expecting to see that the silly SOB had indicated.

There was no indicator on, it was a VW and it had lit its foglight on one side. Funny how the brain plays tricks on you.

1) Anyone else had that happen yet?

2) What's the point of the flashing foglamps? Some el cheapo, half-ar*ed attempt to compete with GM's truly excellent AFL system?

They're called cornering lights. Supposed to help light up the kerbside as you turn a corner. Getting more and more common on mainstream vehicles.

Are you sure it was flashing on and off though?

had a simlilar issue last month,,,saw a car indicating, then next moment saw another light come on, and then as she pulled away the light went off...

thing was she was indicating right. but pulled over to the left to drive around a cyclist before cutting in front of him....thus white light on, and indicator on...

i pulled out in front of her as i thought she was going one way and she ended up going the other.,....oppps....

these lights are IMO dangerous. ok ok there white but how many indicators rely on just orange blubs in clear lenses than over time fade and produce an almost white indicator.

Guess as they become more widely used we'll get used to them...but this time of year you also get people with one working headlight or the others with side sides and one working fog light who never switch off the fog lights..ie sunglasses and fog lights...

possibly added with these turning lights as well....oh dear...

Our lighting regs used to be so strict (and with good reason) but since the backward step of allowing those HID(?) bright headlights it all become a bit of a free for all.

So called "cornering lights" are of questionable use in daytime. My pet theory is that they are for "forgetful" drivers of certain makes who seem to find the responsibility of using indicators a little onerous. As to night time use - BMW "X"s actually have cornering lights for dip and another set for main beam - 'nuff said.

Puddle lamps, HIDs, DRLs, high level brake lights, orange side "marker" lights now becoming common and not just on coaches and lorries...My Montego had illuminated indicator and wash/wipe stalks (I got them mixed up for all of three seconds on my first drive!) My Astra "F" had an orange downlighter in the rear view mirror to bathe the gear lever in ambient light (those night-time gear changes are always so challenging....) I hired a US Ford Focus one summer and found illuminated footwells and cup holders with a choice of SEVEN colours!

Where will it all end?? Any predictions as to the next unlikely place a manufacturer will think of placing a light source?

Yes, I've been saying that for some time. We're in the ludicrous situation where we still having lighting restrictions based on wattage. This takes no account of developments in lighting efficiency.

Quite soon we're going to be in laughable position where a 75 watt dip halogen H4 is illegal (vehicles post 1977 IIRC?), but a 55 watt HID dip, kicking out rather more light and more tightly-focussed with it, is perfectly acceptable. I used to run 75/100 H4s on my old MGB and nobody ever complained, yet driving an HID equipped hire car the other day about 50% of oncoming traffic flashed me.

Roll on LED lighting, we'll be able to fry cats at range. Better still, 55 watt lasers. You won't be able to see much, but anything you do see will have a neat scorch mark on it......

I never said it was flashing on and off. It was just the flash as it came on that triggered the reaction.

I was berating myself for picking up on a white light, but as another poster has pointed out, half the things out there run around with indicators faded to within spit of white anyway....

I never said it was flashing on and off.

You previously said "What's the point of the flashing foglamps?"

If it was flashing, then it must have been going on and off.

I read the OP as saying it was off, then went on (and presumably then went off).

That's a flash to me.
