has anyone had any problems with the avensis and brake failure? i have a 2008 (last of the old shape) 2.2 diesel. i pulled out a junction today and joined some slow moving traffic. went to put on the brakes and nothing. the pedal moved all the way to the floor. it was as if the brakes were not there. i went up the back of a car, luckily i was only doing about 15-20mph.
went to drive off after we exchanged details and the brakes were back.

any advise appreciated. the car was brought froma Toyota main dealer under there approved used car scheme in 2008 and has been serviced by them.

I had a similar problem with a 2000 1.25 ford fiesta. The foot pedal went straight to the floor, very scarey experience. I was able to stop using the handbrake as i was approaching traffic lights and was doing about 10 miles an hour. However happened a few times and the brakes would work normally after i turned the engine off. Ford could not explain the problem as the brakes would work ok when they looked at the car but i got a new mastercylinder installed and then traded it in for another car.

Not a problem i've heard of up till now.

Reading your post does make me wonder whether you'd gradually emptied the vacuum servo tank by repeated brake applications in traffic and the pedal didn't actually go fully to the floor but with unassisted braking gave the feeling that it had...is that possible?

How far had you travelled before the brakes failed?

When, if ever, has the brake fluid been changed?

I know of a couple of instances of brake callipers being a little 'sticky'. Enough to hold a brake on lightly. The resulting heat build up boils the brake fluid. Vapour is compressible. Result is the brake pedal hits the floor. After stopping a little while, everything cools down and the brakes appear normal.

just started the car and driven about 1 mile in normal 40mph conditions. i then approached traffic and came off the accelerator pedal until i dropped to about 20mph - went to put on the brakes and nothing. brake fluid is due to be changed at the next service in 2 months time.

Are you mad, or just trolling?

That's interesting, a friend of the family owns a 2006 Verso 2.2 diesel they've had since new. A few weeks ago they rear ended another car and friend driving it felt sure that she had tried to brake but nothing happened.

The car was taken to Toyota where a complete power failure of the car's ECU was diagnosed (quite why this would cause a brake failure, I don't know) and Toyota replaced it all FOC out of warranty, but didn't go so far as to take responsibility for it being the cause of the accident.

Co-incidence?

>>friend driving it felt sure that she had tried to brake but nothing happened

That's a common symptom of locking the wheels, the driver 'feels' the car accelerated because it doesn't slow as fast as the think it should. I can't explain why it should happen on a 2006 Verso as I would've thought it would have ABS. Unless the recorded ECU failure would also result in a failure of the ABS?

Sadly, it's not my car and I'm getting all the information from somone who isn't all that car literate, but as she described it:

"The brake pedal sank to floor and nothing happened, my car hit the car in front - which was shunted forward, my car then hit it again(!) as it carried on moving forward. I wasn't going fast, and I didn't need to brake hard, it's just that nothing happened when I tried to brake."

At first she had no reason to blame the car, she thought it was all her fault and accepted liability with the insurance. Then, when it arrived at Toyota it turned out that the ECU had died at the time of the crash, without direct physical damage in what was otherwise a minor bump (no airbags fired, only light bodywork stuff). Toyota have changed the ECU and wiring harness FOC, that's the facts, the rest I can only leave to speculation.

I have an 05 Avensis myself, so this is of particular interest to me.

Sounds like pressing acclerator rather than brake.

ABS ecu is separate from engine ecu...
