Does anyone know if this car has an interference or non interference engine,

Its definitely an interference engine but the worst a snapped belt on these usually does is break the rockers.

i was told by a mobile mechanic that i would need a new engine.

All that he knew was that the belt had snapped.

It is possible that more damage has been done, but assuming its the original 8 valve 2.0 HDi then most seem to get away with a new set of rocker arms. It's worth searching on this forum as this question has been asked before.

Thanks for your info. The car is going in to a garage tomorrow, they reckon it may just need rocker arms. So they tend to agree with what you are saying.

why has it snapped would be my question? was it overdue ? has the crankpulley failed ? did the polly belt fail & enter the cam belt ? or did the tensioner fail ? or did the camshaft sieze ?

The timing belt was overdue. 7 months ago i had a new drivebelt fitted & when the timing belt snapped the drivebelt was also shredded & ended up wrapped around the alternator.

I was travelling at approx 15 mph when this happened [ in 2nd/3rd gear.
