Nissan Almera - Rattling exhaust - Glenn 42

Noticed that my exhaust seems to be rattling either on idle when cold or sometimes around 20 mph, but never at any other speed. The rattle seems to be coming from the front- there is nothing more major as the car has recently had an oil and filter change and no problems were detected then mechanically- which would suggest there must be a problem with a loose clamp or maybe the heatshield could be slightly loose.

Is this a major job, or as most people at work suggest just a case of your local garage replacing a clip or giving the exhaust a good whack to put it back into place, and would this be expensive as the MOT is due in six weeks time?

I have a similar problem on my Escort exhaust system.

Rest your hand on the pipe or silencers & it stops. I t sounds as though there is something loose in one of the silencers & I am hoping it will either soot up or rust up.& drop off.

My car recently passed the MoT in this condition as I think the parameters are that the mountings must be sound & it must be gas tight & not too rusty.

Most probaly your heat sheild on the exhaust manifold.(I stand to be corrected).
Rip the heat shield off. They are so flimsy, its not worth undoing the nuts and bolts. Your car will not catch fire !
They are a ridiculous Californian car build rule, that have passed to the E.U.
They are made of Cream Cheese and cause nothing but 'rattles'
I accept they are a heat soak, but metal and plastic fuel systems will not ignite without a naked flame.
Regards.

I did check today, as best I could as I don't have a ramp, and the clamp looks rusty. Also in conversation last night the car won't fail its MOT unless the exhaust is in danger of falling off, but a repair is cheap to cut down on the annoying ringing sound.

I checked the car again and the rattle seems to be coming from the front part of the exhaust nearest the engine. Typically it seems to rattle when the car is idling( though not always) and sometimes around the 1500 rev mark, but at no other times. Any ideas as I do hope this is something simple when I take it up to my local garage this week?
