2004 Golf IV Petrol - Reverse lockout spring failure? - hammerzeit

'04 golf iv petrol. seems there is something wrong with the shifter. normally you have to push down on the knob to get it to go into reverse, but when you stop pushing it springs back up. now, when i push down, it stays down. you can shift into reverse while it's down, but you have to manually 'pull' the shift knob up when you're finished. has the spring failed? can i just replace the boot or is there something else that may have gone?

The spring for this is not in the gearbox it is at the bottom of the gear stick. Remoce the gater and lubricate the mechanism it just be dry and sticking. Regards Peter

You also have a post relating to gear stick vibrations etc... Could the two issues be related?Check engine mounts as if one is failing the gear linkages will be under stress and/or mis-aligned

the reverse lockout spring was fine before i brought the car to the dealership to get the vibrations looked at. i had to fight with them a bit to get the car looked at (they said everything is normal and it's under warranty).

when i got home from the dealership after they fixed the hanger, i noticed the shifter was getting stuck. the dealership says they don't know what i'm talking about and it's my problem now. that's why i'm trying to figure out how to fix it myself.
