We go back and forwards to France quite a lot. Usually once a month for a few days. We take stuff there and back and can usually fill a good size estate car. We have a SAAB 95 2.2tid at the moment which serves quite well, and it has a proper spare wheel to avoid silly happenings with the space-saver on the wrong side of the Channel. It will eventually give out, due to starship mileage.

What would be a good replacement ? I don't want to spend more than £10K (I'm like that) and would ideally like something that can be fairly easily fixed when something goes wrong i.e. not too many electronics. And I would rather stick with a car that doesn't have a cam-belt. Any ideas ?

I'd hesitate to recommend another Saab given what GM seem to have done to their quality control - or a Peugeot, where quality control was never a priority.

Best choice could be between Ford Mondeo, Skoda Octavia (cheaper than a Passat or Audi A6 of similar age) or Volvo V70. Do you need a diesel? I ask because for £10k you'll be getting something a few years old where diesels start to need very expensive repairs.

One more thought - a lot of people on here and other forums swear by (rather than at) their Citroens. If you spend a lot of time in France there will be garages who can repair a C5 or Picasso if it does go wrong.

Renault? I had 7 reliable Renaults between 1988 and 2001 but the last one was new in 1998 and there are too many varying stories recently about whether they have or haven't got quality sorted out after a terrible falliong-off in the early 2000s.

Good luck, and do let us know how you get on.

Dunno if fuel economy is a priority, if it isn't a Subaru Legacy estate would be near the top of my list, they are as reliable as cars get, as would a petrol Honda Accord Tourer be.

The Citroën C5 estate is a cracking load lugger, but as you're scared of dodgy electrics that wipes Vauxhall, Citroën and Peugeot off your wish list!

FUN OPTIONS....

I used to work with a lady who had bought a barn in france and it was being converted, she and her hubbie bought a cheap van....

what about a cheap "Transit Connect" (the small one) and a fun car for your 10k..

hey next to no electronics to go wrong...hahaha....

if you had to have one car though...i'd go for the v70. decent size and pretty sturdy...

I had a 93 Vector diesel from new, it was an okayish car but had quite a few quality issues and a lot of niggling faults so I didn't keep it long.

The V70 would be my choice, even just for comfort. But I am sure the D5 version anyway has a cambelt.

BMW 5 series tourer would get my vote also, very quiet and comfy but can get a load in them. Steer clear of anything french or vauxhall 2000 onwards. Another option would be go for a korean SUV like a santa fe or sorento etc. A lot of car for the moeny and generally reliable motors.I went from an E39 into a santa fe and havent looked back yet.

Did you come to a decision on a change, Veryoldbear, or are you sticking with the Saab?
