I hear Vauxhall are offering the first ever "lifetime" warranty on new cars (actually limited to 100,000 miles).

Too good to be true?

Lifetime Warranty - only applies to 1st owner!!

How many new car buyers keep their cars longer than 3/4 years

2nd and subsequent owners get the normal 2/3 year warranty

The full gaurantee is printed in these weeks Autobild it applies to Opel as well. It is not all it seems it is limited to 160k kilometers after 50k they give 90% of parts cost until 160k when they will give 40% the labour costs are included at no cost .The life time is in fact a little complicated a 11000 km per year will give you 14 years and 6months.Theoretically if you do under 50k km by 2030 then you should be able to get the car repaired free of charge.

Cambelts ,brakes clutches and service parts are not included all services must be made as required by an Opel dealer it is in fact insured against Opel going bankrupt by CG insurance company. It is to run with the existing gaurantee whatever that means. The mobility gaurantee is only 1 year which is the shortest of any manufacturer Kia being 9 years and Mercedes 30 years.

Many vehicles in Germany do more km than this in 1 year and certainly in two as I am sure they do in the UK.

It can also be transfered to different owners providing it has not exceeded 100k km.

Lifetime Warranty - only applies to 1st owner!!

Yes and no, the second owner has the option of inheriting the remainder of the warranty by paying Vauxhall a fee.

>>all services must be made as required by an Opel dealer

A cynic may think that as sales are falling then they're looking for income through servicing.

I don.t think you need be a cynic.

A few points if I may:

  1. Going by the terms & conditions (below) the Vauxhall offer is NOT the same as the Opel offer
  2. The Vauxhall lifetime warranty is not "underwritten" but is being stood by Vauxhall
  3. Whilst the customer is required to have the car serviced according to Vauxhall service schedule (fairly reasonable IMO) this does NOT have to be at a Vauxhall dealership. An annual inspection at a Vauxhall dealership IS required but this is free of charge
  4. Whilst the lifetime warranty is not the same as the first 3 years, it is very comprehensive & far more than a purchaser got two days ago
  5. Many people do keep their car more than 3 years. We kept our last one for 7 years

>>Annual activation and validation of the lifetime warranty cover is also dependent upon the confirmation that the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommended servicing schedule.

bd. You have my full apologies.

"The Vauxhall lifetime warranty is not "underwritten" but is being stood by Vauxhall"

And if Vauxhall go bankrupt then its underwritten by CG

Its exactly the same as the OPEL gaurantee it was written by them for all European countries at their head office here in Germany that is why they use 160k because it relates directly to 100k miles.

Having the the car serviced at an independent garage gives to many get out clauses no matter how good the garage is.

It was written by lawers not engineers.

I am left wondering why the Vauxhall offer is so much better than the Opel offer in place, which applies to exactly the same cars made in exactly the same factories.

I think if I was buying a Vauxhall in a few months' time I'd be reading the terms of the agreement *very* carefully.

It makes no sense to restrict a warranty everywhere apart from one jurisdiction. The cynic in me is thinking that Vauxhall will get the publicity with this offer, sell a few cars over a few months with a full warranty and then quietly "harmonise" the offer with the rest of Europe, without publicising the fact.

Then you get the happy (for Vauxhall) situation where the average punter thinks he's getting more than he is, because of all the publicity.

The only other reason I can think of for this is that there is something in UK law that prevents them from restricting the extended portion of the warranty in this way.

Also, is this dealer or manufacturer backed? If I buy a cheap, discounted Vauxhall from an internet outlet, will the warranty still apply?

I can see it leading to a lot of confusion and misunderstanding with a lot of disatisfied customers, there appear to be to many exceptions and restrictions.

I have just read the "terms and Conditions" on the Vauxhall web site it states there must be a fully stamped up service book services carried to be out by a Vauxhall approved service centre.

Hi Andy, perhaps you would give us the exact quote because I certainly can't see where it says that, although I may be looking in the wrong place, obviously.

Vauxhall - "Lifetime warranty" - Collos25

Annual activation and validation of the lifetime warranty cover is also dependent upon the confirmation that the vehicle has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommended servicing schedule.

This is the quote its under "terms and conditions" but I must admit re reading it you are probably correct and you can take elsewhere for service although it is probably impossible to carry out work and comply with Vauxhalls terms they only need to say it should have had a new software download. But on the face of it you are correct.

Vauxhall may request details of this service history at any time during the warranty period.

Depending on which way you read this you could expect a knock on the door at 3.00am in the morning.
