Ford Focus - Cooling fan problems - Robertreid

I've got a 59 plate ford focus 1.6 tdci which i got in march. Ever since I got it a couple of times a week my cooling fan runs on for 20-30mins after the ignition has been turned off. My car has been in for repair 7 times and the fault keeps happening. The dealership say no fault can be found although they have replaced the cooling fan, cooling fan module, temperature sensor and cooling fan relay. Unfortunately it still happens. They say it's a fault however can't find it. Its due to go back in for a new ECU. I have asked for a replacement vehicle as I feel this fault has gone on long enough. This was rejected by the dealer. After speaking to the finance company involved with my car they advised me to reject the car. This was also knocked back by the dealership. I do alot of miles a week and feel that the fault could be serious.

I'm not very technical with cars, I was just hoping I could get some advice what I could do next thanks

Is that an exageration or does it really run for 30 mins the garage don't seem to be able to replicate the fault ,thet often run on for upto ten minutes in hot weather thats quite normal. They have changed all the parts that control the fan I dought if they are faulty as well perhaps your perception of time.Don't forget they can go off and then restart again.

The majority of the time this happens it is 20 mins however the last couple of times it has been on for 30 mins. When this happened I was talking to a branch manager at another ford dealership. Unfortunately the service staff were off as it was saturday so couldn't put it on machine. I have been told that my model of car should shut down after around 30 seconds even in hot weather however i live in scotland so we aren't getting much hot weather. Even in March when I got the car it was quite cold and this kept happening. The garage are the one that told me there is a fault with the car. It actually sounds like a plane taking off.

There is only one part that can trigger the fan and thats the temp sensor it could be the car is getting to hot (probably not)or they have not changed the parts they have said(probable). There are a few parts that can stop it working but it needs the trigger to start it. Its only a simple thermostat with an input and output and a set point.Take it back to the garage and tell them to repair it properly because if what you say is true and I do not doubt it the garage lacks someone with a little competence.

Thanks very much I've been arguing with the dealership since I got the car. So you don't think that a new ECU will work on the car. The only fault the garage has detected was that there was unusual readings with the temperature sensor and that is why they they changed it. Im just worried incase the car is overheating and causes any damage to the car.

Thats why you need it checking by a competent person, not somebody who thinks they know you need somebody that actually knows what they are doing.

hi does sound a extreme amount of time for cooling, just too correct a preavious post car no longer use fan switches like sugested, your car is can bus and relies on the body controll module too bring in the fan which gets its temp info from the engine ecu so either engine ecu thinks its hotter than it is earthing fault ect or body control ecu does, try another dealer you can take it too any ford and tell them this is the final chance, if the car is financed dont let ford tell u what u can do,just stop paying the finance and tell them ur not paying for faulty goods they will recover there debt from ford as this is were there money is but i will not get that far ford will step in and correct this, this is legal remember do not pay it ,they will chase up fords good luck ! one more thing as i think of it has your car got aircon if so try not too use it see it the problem only happens when switched on thanks

Thanks very much. The car is going in today to get a new ECU fitted. Hopefully it fixes the problem. The finance company are now trying to help me with the dealership but i don't want to stop the payments incase it affects my credit rating. That was my first plan to cancel the payments and hand everything back to the dealership. Instead I just tried to reject the car which resulted in my car going in for this new ECU. However if it doesn't work this time then I think I will need to go ahead with cancelling the payments. I don't use the fans or air con i think I've only used them 3 times since I bought the car so it doesn't affect it. They are all great at selling cars but don't want nothing to do with it when its faulty.

There is still a common temp swicth mounted in the head to trigger the ECU which in turn triggers the fans it cannot work any otherway,it has to get its temp reading from somewhere and then switch the fans its irelevent whether it uses can bus or old fashioned wire to wire.I hope fitting the new ECU cures the problem if not do as Robert suggests and stop paying for it.
