Vauxhall Vivaro 1.9DI 52 - Vivaro trouble starting when hot - vokf

Hi!

I recently bought used Vivaro (52 plate) from a private seller. The Van runs smooth, no trouble starting from cold.

Last week, I nipped out, and stopped at a local shop on the way home. The van wouldn't start - it was turning over, but not starting.

The battery started to get low, and so I sent my partner home to get her car to charge the battery..

15mins later+15mins charging, the Van started..

Ok, now this has happened a few times - always after running for a few miles (ie enough for the engine to get hot).

The van starts first time every morning, lunchtime and evening (ie from cold)

The temp gauge never goes above 1/2 way (90C?) - this sunday I drove from Hertfordshire to Birmingham, stuck on the M1 for a bit..

I've been scouring the forums, and found the posts about "Drain Off Pipe"

http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?202748-Diesel-DTI-Starting-Problems-Spill-Pipes-EGR

So... tonight, I removed the cover and located them, picture on link below;

http://www.clarkhouse.co.uk/dsd/vivaro_spill_pipes.jpg

The 4th injector(?) from the left has a damp bit there...

I think this is worthwhile doing - but this is my 1st Diesel. If its really a matter of replacing these pipes, then I'm pretty sure I can do it :-) I'm fairly technical, and have replaced brakes, cylinder heads in old bangers in years gone past!

Its not clear in my mind what these things do, and if they need to be primed (somehow?) after fitting the new pipes.

I guess this could also be an EGR valve problem? One thing at a time I guess!

I'm sorry if this is a bit basic - but I've found

Hi,

Bit of an update..

I changed a few leak-off pipes, and as I'm not that confident, tried to re-start. It didn't (just turned over).

I asked my local garage to take a look, and they found the fuel filter was in a bad way. They replaced, and managed to get it started to drive back to their unit. Then would not start, and they re-checked the new fuel filter to find it's also clogged.

At this point, they suggested getting a local desiel specialst to look at it.

They can get it started with a squirt of easi start, but I'll only use that to get for repair - its not been driven.

I've had a busy weekend, so not had a chance to look at this. (I'm a DJ, so are looking at Van hire this coming weekend)

Quite a few people have suggested cleaning the fuel tank, flushing it out and replacing the fuel filter again.

I think I can hear a buzzing - but will confirm when I get in from work.

I'll post back tonigight. Current plan is to look at work involved in droping/cleaning tank, and deciding if I want to do it myself. I'm not that keen!
The garage suggested Wades up in Hoddesdon, and a few others have also recommended them.

The tank is fairly empty, just above "red" (probably part of the problem?)

I may need your help - but will confirm the buzzing from the tank pump tonight. To be honest, I don't even know if its highish pressure on the tank end, so very wary of anything at the moment!

Thanks,

Jason

Ok, back from work;

I can't hear a buzzing coming from the tank.

We did try to start using easi-start, it ran for about 20seconds, before stopping.

I could then hear a buzzing coming from the engine bay, I think the (high pressure?) pump that is fed from the fuel filter was causing the "buzz" - I could feel some small vibration (like a motor runing fast).

If you think you can help - please call 07969 919590/email quietbiker at gmail . com

Thanks,

Jason

The very most likely cause of your hot hard starting is either the crankshaft sensor which when warm can/does go open circuit which when cools again vehicle re-starts. Another very common fault is the starter motor vehicle starts easily when cold but when warm draws to much current robbing the injectors of current hense no hot start
