Ford Focus TDdi - Engine cooling fan - Martin1981

Hi all

I have an 02reg Focus 1.8TDdi diesel with 160k on the clock, which so far has given me 10k of trouble free motoring since I bought it just before last Christmas.

However, I have recently noticed that the coolant fan seems to come on every time I accellerate to above 50mph or up a hill in 4th gear and when I slow down to 30mph or stop at a junction/traffic lights the fan will run for a few seconds and then switch off, so it is not on constantly. Not sure whether it has done it ever since I bought the car or whether it has come about recently. The temp gauge always stays in the middle whether the fan is on or off, so the engine appears to stay at normal operating temp once reached and the coolant level is fine.

I'm wondering (and hoping) that it may just be an over sensitive temperature sensor which is activating the fan whenever the engine is put under slight strain. Or could it be a sign that the engine is overheating and not registering on the temp gauge?

Any advice/comments/suggestions appreciated

Martin

Its probably doing what its supposed to do ,the ambient temp has been a lot higher just recently.

If the car is fitted with a/con,then the cooling fan(s) will run constantly at slow speed when a/c engaged up to a road speed of 60kph.There is no rad fan switch on these. The fan and temp gauge all work via the engine coolant temp sensor for engine control unit.Is it possible to hear the cooling fan above 50mph?

Thanks for your replies both. The car does not have aircon as its the bog standard L model. The fan can only be heard at 40mph or less, usually after slowing down from 50mph plus, but as I stated it only runs for a few seconds and then cuts off, so it isn't on constantly and the car seems to be driving absolutely fine.

So I take it there is no need to be worried?
