Volkswagen Golf convertible 1994 - clicking noise on reverse - Amanda66

My golf has a loud clicking/tapping noise when I reverse, all other gears are ok, this is worrying me and I would like to know if its serious, the car still reverses just has this noise. I want to take it to a garage but do not want to be pressured into a new gearbox if its not required. can somebody help,

Does this happen when turning at full lock, or when reversing in any direction even straight?

As soon as I start reversing either in a straight line or turning - Its really worrying.

It could be a damaged tooth on the reverse gear set.

So which would be cheaper? Re-con gearbox or getting a specialist to replace the broken part?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea which would be cheaper (assuming the problem is a broken gear tooth, like I suggested, but it might not be).
