With regard to traders (or rogue traders?) parking cars for sale in lay bys and on road junctions with note inside window saying phone a mobile number.

Has anybody knowledge of local authority attempts to prevent this, perhaps by laws or some enforcement orders.

As well as the nuisance and irritation this is causing I feel sorry for the naive individuals who are buying this dross.

One of my pet hates when I come to the UK these people operate paying no tax ,no carinsurance ,no trade insurance,and no comeback for the unfortunate buyer of these normally auction bought rubbish.If you report it to the local authority then they should by rights have them removed that is if they are on public property.People might say they are only trying to make ends meet during difficult times but in reality they are normally quite big in the business sense and are used for money laundering and other rackets there is one in city where I visit has just been caught with £870k stuffed up his chimney according to the local press.

Apologies everybody-I see this one of HJ faq. That said I would still welcome responses on this topic- the more opinions and comments the better.

An Escort van appeared recently -the fresh white paint was peeling back from around the headlamps before it was parked for sale, the headlamps,bonnet, and rear doors fitted in a few places, the quick respray had missed most of the wheel arches. The registration plates were from Northern Ireland-would be difficult for anybody to do a history check .......the van shouted dodgy out loud ........but after a few days it had gone so I guess somebody fell in love with it.

Comes down to buyer beware I guess

Had a spate of these near us a couple of year back - parked on a grass verge and causing an eyesore. Each car either had no tax, or the tax disc was iffy so I used the following form:

www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Untax...3

The problem went away

ps, it is Government and then the DVLA who are responsible for this type of thing - not your local council

“motor vehicle” has the same meaning as in the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 (c. 3);

Some LA's are active in this field and at least one reported Trading Standards.

Note (2) above up to the Trader to prove he is not involved in motor trade?????????

It is the trading standards dept of the local authority that can and will stop these people under the illegal trading aspect.

Thanks everyone -I will look closely at the tax discs and also see if any more threads come up

I smiled at the cardboard flyer fixed inside the Daewoo Matiz last week . It said "ideal first car","ideal town car","ideal motorway car"..........amazingly versatile those Matizes! , but worryingly there are purchasers out there who will believe anything that is written down particularly when followed up with some sales patter from the trader.
