I`ve never been a football fan - but Mrs O who originates from the Orient is a real FAN of England. So amidst all the shouting and yelling from the other end of the sofa - I can`t help glancing at the screen now and then - though it`s just a reflex really.

But last night I glanced up and saw a ball just seem to scoot straight up a goalkeepers hands, over them, off the ground - and into the net.

There was a lot of howling over that, from the sofa, cos it was the USA....and 4-0 to us was expected - at least.

So what`s the informed insight into that? Should the hands be better held thumbs inwards, down, or what. What next? And why was David Beckham wearing a suit?

I remember laughing when the Old Man tried to get me to watch the match in 66. He said something like " You might never see us in the final again in your lifetime`

I laughed at that of course, at the time.....

I couldn't believe the day after he (Greene) was on the golf course! He's playing for his country for heavens sake. Get on a training ground and practice. They're the ones moaning about this new ball. Which they seem to do every world cup.

It doesn't matter which manager is picked, it is the selection of players that do not gel. They play fine within their own clubs, but pick them out and put them together they are a disaster.

In a world cup year, the season, depending on which UK country qualifies, that season must be cut early, say March. Then any players chosen to play for their country have a couple of months to play together and gel as a proper team. Making it better to choose a squad.

The England team IS made up of great players and managed by a great leader. But due to the lack of seriousness from the players and the poor pitch formation and lack of team spirit, I'm afraid this team is doomed. They wont make the semis the way things are going. They should all stick to golf. If thats what they feel they should be doing instead of training.

They're just not serious enough. You can see it in their demeanour already.

That`s interesting Ben. (I`m serious by the way, when I say I know nothing about football)

I`ve sometimes wondered though - whether any of the top league teams in England - would run rings round the actual England team.

Sort of hyperthetically of course, as I realize players can`t be in two teams at once - and teams have commitments..

I mean to say, what would happen if the best current team playing in England - was sent in as the England team? Does any other country do that? Or has it happened in the past?

"I`ve sometimes wondered though - whether any of the top league teams in England - would run rings round the actual England team"

They probably would. The fact is to play for your country, you either have to be born there or through parentage. As most premiership clubs are made up of mostly foreign players, we could not field such a team in the World Cup in its current form.

I feel like this team and others that have gone before them lack passion. They see the World Cup as a holiday. Hence the stampede to the golf course. Back home they are overpaid prima donnas. I wonder if a team were picked from the lower divisions if this would make for a better side.

They should be honoured to wear the England shirt. No, at the end of the USA game many dragged it off and swapped with their opponents. I want to see the pride in wearing that shirt, not leaving the pitch in an American shirt. Several didn't do this. Though it is an unofficial tradition, I think that could have been done in the dressing rooms, if they were that desperate.

This team has no passion and its been the same ewvery World Cup since 1966. They are individuals that are thrown together, and if they win, they win. I don't think they care. They need to train to win. They need to go out to win. Not sit back after one goal. Their danger is they always do this and throw away their chances.

And my wife wonders why we can't produce an England manager.

Capella went on record today to say the team was tired. Boo hoo, poor things.

Okay then, if we qualify for the next World Cup tournament in 4 years time how about this. The season 2003/4 for the Premiership is cut and finished by March of 2004. This gives the squad enough time to rest and play together as a team. By the start of the finals they might have gelled sufficiently to actually play decent football.

In the meantime. Lock them in a room together over the summer and play them recordings of their matches and show them where they went wrong. And play them the matches from the quarter finals onwards to show them where they can go right. If that fails to inspire them, clear the lot out and pick a squad from the next division, who might show some passion to play for their country.

As for Capella. Keep him on. You can't blame every manager we have had over the past 10 years or so. (Or even since '66) It's the players. Have a sort out and see what we can do.
