Renault Clio II - Gear lever movement - burge

My son has a clio and when taking up the drive his gearstick moves quite some way. this does not seem normal does anyone know what's causing this?

Not being familier with the car I don't know how much movement is 'normal' but it sounds as though you could have excessive gearbox/engine movement due to failing rubber mounts.

Hi Peter, I have since been under the car and there is a rear engine mount that is shaped like a dog bone attached to the crossmember, I can move it slightly with my hand but not sure if this is normal,

I had a clio for a short time and the gear stick did move about quite a lot (more than any other car I've driven) when accelerating, breaking or going over bumps...I think its just a characteristic of the car to be honest.

I have driven another clio albeit a 1200, but this one was ok.

Hi burge I had the same thing on my clio.

It is the "dog bone" engine stabiliser/ mount they can be changed pretty easily just a couple of bolts. it made a huge difference.

Fitted a new rear stabiliser bar this weekend, Job done gearstick now Ok. comes off very easily and is only two bolts to undo. in all probably took less than 20 mins to change and thats getting tools out and ramps.
