Land Rover Discovery 3 - Tanked - Well Tanked

My discovery 3 has developed damage on the elbow at the top of the fuel tank this will require a new fuel tank £850 fitted.

My intial thoughts are: If this was a design fault there would very very many more incidents like this, apparently this is a once in a fitters life time event.

As the damage is through 'wear' and must be caused by movement suggesting to me a failed fitting.

I accept that by owning a car I must accept wear and tear on certain parts brakes tyres oil plugs gaskets etc Would I be reasonable in claiming that this falls well outside what is normal wear and tear?

Your learned thought's would be of great vaule as I am staring down the throat of a £1000 hair cut !!

I had the same problem with my 2005 Disco this week. My local 4x4 specialist repaired it at a cost of £147 including VAT. 2.5 hours work.

Hi,

You've not mentioned if its petrol or diesel. A diesel tank can be welded - even if its full of fuel as it's not volatile like petrol. I know because I've welded many truck tanks leaking.

If its petrol, there are a number of specialists who can repair it by first 'cleaning' the tank prior to welding. I doubt you will need a new tank - a repair can save you ££££
