Renault Laguna II 1.9 dCI - Whistle from engine - rossinatrench

Ever since sunday just gone my 2001 (51) Laguna II 1.9 dCI 120bhp 8v has started making a whistling sound. The sound seems to be coming from the offside front of the engine bay. It has only started since I took the alternator belt off to change it but turned out the one I'd been given was too small! So on went the old belt but I put it on the opposite way to before. I did disconnect the fuel line to the fuel pump, and bled everyting before starting. Could this be causing it? Earlier on sunday I did an oil change, and no differently to the many times before, so I cannot see why this would have caused any problem. I have checked all the piped leading to and from the turbo, but all seem fine with no splits. The sound only gets noticable whilst accelerating at around 3000rpm and not any higher than about 50mph. Any ideas?

If the noise is coming from the turbo it will change pitch with a change in throttle setting, in fact you can play a tune on it with the accelerator, if it doesn't do this it must be something mechanical like the belt you refitted being to tight.

It is a constant pitch. The tensioner is spring loaded so auto tensions, as there the bolt does not lock it in place at all but acts as a leaver. I will try changing the belt after work tomorrow and see what happends. Thank you for your help!

Does it only happen under acceleration, and disappear when you lift off?

It only happens under acceleration, then goes when I lift off. It seems quieter today, but still there.

Hey Rossinatrench,

Im not up on engines and such, but I have a 2002 Laguna 1.9 dci and I had a whistle noise coming from it too.. It would get higher in pitch when I accelerated and disappear when I put in the clutch, bottom line is after about 2 months of this my Turbo now needs replacing. apparently there was oil going back into the turbo?

I was driving along one day and I just lost power and drive.

hope this helps.
