Easter Holiday Fuel Rip-off - Roly93

Does the board think that fuel will go back down again after easter ? As the government only put fuel up 1p in the budget, I would like to know why suddenly fuel seems to have gone up from £1.14.9 to around £1.20 overnight around here (Reading) ?

Will it go back down when they have finished ripping off the bank holiday motorists ?

I read a quote from an industry spokesman who pointed out that there's also VAT on the 1p duty making it a 1.175p increase altogether. He said garages didn't see why they should pay the VAT so were rounding up the increase to 2p.

But that totally ignores the point that they price petrol to 1/10th of a penny per litre, so they could easily go from (say) 116.9 to 118.1 rather than 118.9.

The price per litre doesn't have to end in .9

My local Shell price went up by 4p per litre last week, it had consistently been 2 or 3 p cheaper than BP and Texaco stations.

I think Darling's increase was used as a smokescreen or excuse.

I'd love to know the legallity of charging VAT on fuel duty. VAT as its name implies is a tax on the value of an object, fuel duty obviously has no value - how can they charge VAT?

Another reason for the more than 1p increase is stopping the subsidy on biofuels. All fuels have some biofuel. So I reckon that's probably at least another 1p. Then VAT. Then an excuse for garages to add a bit more.

VAT, as its name suggests, is charged on value added. The extra 1p duty is an added value, therefore it is liable to VAT.

Fuel has been spotted at 121p for unleaded round Basingstoke. Mr Cameron reckons his lot will have floating fuel duty, when its cheaper tax will go up and when its dearer tax will come down. What price is needed to start the fuel protests again? Fuel seems to have gone up every time I fill up. It will be interesting to see if it goes down after Easter, my guess is it won't.

I filled up in Hemel Hempstead at my usual Shell station a week ago at 117.9 for diesel. On Friday came to Cambs., 121.9 everywhere. Went over to Norfolk today, mostly 122.9 along the A14 and A11 until a new Shell station near Wymondham at 117.9 - I swerved in so suddenly I nearly spilt my tea.

Hadn't occurred to me it's just the holiday rip-off.

I'm seeing a wide variation in prices now too, in my part of Surrey Diesel is cheapest at 118.9p per litre at a well known supermarket, more like 121.9p at franchises/independents. I was in Watford today and filled up for 115.9p per litre at the same supermarket, even the franchises/independents were 118.9p or less. Similar story in Swindon too.

Obviously they'll all charge whatever they can get away with to maximise profits, not illegal I'm sure but it feels like a localised cartel....

AAAAHHH Idle-chatter - you've finally found the bargain of Watford, on the A41 - I often if the M25 is slow, and I need - lunch/a wee/fuel its worth coming off - filling up and its really easy to get back onto the M1.

Today , sat 10th April, on the south circular up by Hornimans museum it was 1.17.9 and last week up near Eltham, take 3rd junction from Mc DOnalds towards the town centre - I filled up at 1.16.9 - which was nice
