02 2.0TDCi fuel problem - stumped
hello, im having trouble with my mondeo tdci, 2.0l. problem started when glow plug light came on, it cut out but restarted, drove a few hundred yards then cut out and wouldnt re-start, took it to local electro deisels who diagnosedd, dirty fuel, they changed the filter and suggested i change it again two weeks later, now,, after about a week i only covered 60-70 mile. same thing happened, but would always restart, and drive for a while, so i changed the filter myself, now it starts fine , but as soon as you pull away the engine looses power and dies, restarts and ticks over fine, no smoke, cant get it into be looked at till next week , just wondering if theres any thing i could try,? by the way, had pump reconditioned, and recon injecters in november, long winded question sorry,.

We have fitted recon pumps, recon injectors to TDCIs in the past and a lot have come back to haunt us. I am not a fan of recon parts on these cars. I think you will need to contact whoever did the recon work and discuss with them, otherwise another monumental bill!

spoke to them today and they said they cant do anything without seeing it, which is fair enough, but cant afford to get it recovered to surrey, 350-400 miles, thts why i was asking for advice . just have to wait till next week to get it into ford i guess, or does anyone fancy a mondeo tdci ghia x 52 plate, going cheap, !!!!!!!!!!

I have a 53 plate mondeo tdci and had similar problem last year when the car cut out but would restart again sometimes having to leave it 10mins. After spending £500 on repairs which made no difference i changed the camshaft sensor which cured the fault. Only about £20 from Ford for the part and easily fitted.

camshaft sensor , mmm, would that not have showed up on machine when it was checked first time?, but for £20 i suppose it will be worth a try.

just been out and checked and it has the black sensor, i understand that these wernt that reliable, and i should change it for a grey one,?als there seem to be a small leak of diesel from the middle pipe connection on top of the filter, could that be the cause,??

My car was checked by ford and the AA and no fault codes were present. It was only after a friend from work texted a friend of his at another ford garage that i found this to be a common problem. Good luck .

nope it aint the sensor, just fitted a new one , still the same.
now it seems to run for a while then stop.after restarting it runs for a second then stops . if i wait a few minutes it starts and runs for a few minutes again. im wondering if the new filter could be the problem, could it be that it runs till the fuel in the filter body is used then this is why it stops, waiting a few minutes allows the filter body to refill. ??. can i remove the feed pipe from the tank to filter and see what the fuel delivery is like, ??

the fuel delivery is like ??

Nope, there is no pressure feed to the filter, the injector pump sucks fuel from the tank through the filter. The pipe on the filter that is leaking is probably the return pipe as the feed pipe is under suction. It's likely that if one pipe is leaking then the others may be and air is getting sucked in to the system. Is it a Ford filter ? if not I'd change it for a Ford one, also check that the pipes are correctly fitted and their plastic clips are in place and complete (not broken).

thanks kieth, no its not a ford filter , do you think a change to a ford filter may do the trick? all the pipes seem ok, clips intact. can the full end connection clips be replaced ? or perhaps jubilee clips instead ? please advise.
02 2.0TDCi fuel problem - kithmo
The quality of filters varies and there may be a problem with the pipes on the top not being exactly the same ( i.e diameter and position of clip holders) and hence giving a poor fit.
Also their is a non-return valve in one of the connections inside the filter, this could leak, possibly causing loss of suction.
IIRC the ends of the pipes are not available separately, you have to purchase the whole pipe with ends on.
It would be difficult to replace the ends of the pipes with jubilee clips due to the orientation of the filter pipes being vertical, there may be clearance issues, plus the return pipe has two lines connected to it.
