Hello
My Octavia with the 1.9 110bhp diesel engine in has developed the classic signs of MAF failure - low on power, juddery under acceleration. However there's the added bonus of the traction control light coming on and staying on when it happens. Are the two things linked in any way? My usual mechanic is looking at it today but it would be nice to get the accumulated knowledge of the backroom.

Thanks

Just had a call from the mechanic. Apparently there's a problem with the timing control solenoid. He asked when I had the timing belt done last - it was mid 2007 at about 85,000 miles (currently done 140,000) so wondered about that. I said that I wasn't planning on changing it again before 160,000 or 2011 so they'll check the timing and if they have to replace the solenoid (approx. £130 for the part) it might be as well to put a new belt on.

Any views?

Having had the incorrect solenoid supplied twice, the car's been put back together. The timing's now exactly right (good job as I opted to have the cambelt done at the same time as the fuel pump had to come off to fit the solenoid).

However, we're now into the realms of suspected turbo problems - overboost detected and mutterings of new turbo being required. I wonder if the vanes on the turbo are stuck - is there any way of reliably cleaning them? I've seen other sites recommend Innotec's turbo cleaning kit. Does anyone have experience of using that?

Thanks

We have tried the Innotec a couple of times, results a bit mixed, it seemed to work on one but not on another two. Our experience with cleaning VNT is that is clears things for a short while, but they still come back to haunt you later, so only permanent fix seems to be replacement. If you can clean yourself (not pay someone esle a lot of money) then it is worth a try.

Added a probably less than useful mobile phone picture of what I think is the EGR valve to the link below

It's been cleaned by the garage and they'll refit it on Monday and see if that makes any difference. If that doesn't work we're looking at a new turbo as they've checked the function of the actuator as well.

Well the garage still have it and are getting increasingly stumped. So far they've replaced a faulty timing solenoid and did the cambelt while they were at it, cleaned the EGR valve, put a replacement MAF on it to see if that worked, checked the turbo spindle, checked the action of the turbo actuator and replaced the boost valve.

I went in and took the car out for a spin this morning. It refuses to rev beyond 3,000 rpm unless you build up to it very slowly and if you don't it kangaroos along. When you get to 3k rpm there's some blue smoke evident from the exhaust.

Replacing the timing solenoid appears to have cured its slightly less than instant firing and white smoke on starting from cold however.

Any ideas anyone?

You need some diagnostics - could still be VNT trouble. Are you getting overboost error? Can they read live data and see what's happening, shouldnt be too dificult to diagnose this. I take it they have some diagnostics kit of some sort?

The boost is apparently exactly on spec at idle but there is an overboost error on load. It's going to a diesel specialist next week for further investigation, probably involving live data reading.

Does sound rather like VNT, but live data is most useful in nailing it.

Thanks - VNT trouble - is that the turbo vanes that should move, sticking? If so, what's the solution generally, a bit of a clean or a whole new turbo unit?

Thanks

I can suggest 1) oil change to best quality oil- full synthetic. Then a thrash down the motorway.
2) If that doesnt help then have the turbo removed and re-conditioned before it blows up.

Tiz the traction control unit that causes the problem. It does not show up under annalasis but this is the problem as it causes headaches with everything else. My 1.8 vrs has shown all sorts of problems but when asr button pressed prior to starting, problem solved, well nearly. I like the traction control I've just to find a permanent cure.
