94 1.8TD failed MOT due to excessive smoke. - japan4
My mondeo has failed its MOT because they refused to do the emmisions as there is blue smoke coming from the exhaust? its worse in the mornings but if i pump the fuel filter it seems to stop and run better whilst pumping. my friend seems to think it may be a problem with the fuel system so i changed the filter and still the same. any idea's???

many thanks

Blue smoke is usually indicative of oil burning, which means excess wear somewhere along the way, possibly valve guides, piston rings or bore wear, hence the reason they won't do the emissions, they don't want to blow your engine up when they rev it up..

Could possibly be that the external pump advance is not working, check that the connections are good or you could apply 12 volts externally by connecting a wire to the battery and touching it on either of the terminals on the pump

I reckon Peter N is on the money. Common problem the advanced unit on the pump failing. makes them very smokey bluey cold!
You can buy the advanced solonoid as a seperate part

If its the same as the Escort there are two push on terminals on the pump, one may be a two pin plug, one or both of these should have 12v on them when starting from cold. I had this problem with my sons P100 pick up, I fitted and engine from and Escort which was a bit different from the old Sierra engine and it ran OK except for uneven tickover and clouds of smoke, when I applied 12v to these connections the problem ceased. The engine seems to run perfectly well with the voltage on them permanently.

is it the 2 pin black plug with a red an a brown wire, that connects to the round thing that sticks out the side of the diesel injection pump?

Thats one of them, connect one wire to battery+ and the other to earth, the other one is on the other side of the pump.

ok i will try that. if the car is running and i unplug it is it supposed to do anything? ie make the engine run lumpy. as when i did it, there was no difference. if it is supposed to do something there it looks like we found the problem :)

Well done! I think it should be operated by a temperature sensor but didn't bother to sort it as it worked OK. Don't know much about Ford engines, I'm a Citroen diesel man myself.

just add approx 1pint of home heating oil to your tank before taking vehicle to test
this will not harm your your pump or engine in any way. A guaranteed way to pass
